I’m surprised. Those clothes…but, aren’t you…? to Marulk
Marulk (fan translation: Maruruk) is a Delver that lives in the Seeker Camp on the 2 nd layer of the Abyss alongside the legendary White Whistle Delver; Ozen the Immovable. Despite his young age, he is already a Blue Whistle Delver due to being a direct apprentice of a White Whistle Delver. [1]
He is in charge of the telescope inside the camp and is often keeping watch of the surroundings so that a gondola can be lowered when a Delver shows up. [2]
Before Marulk travelled with his father to the Abyss, he seemingly was part of Jeseku’s royalty and a so-called «child of the shadows»; children born into the Jeseku royalty, who are genetically susceptible to the sun and no longer life expectance than the age of ten. [3]

Marulk is a young boy with short blue hair and a rounded face. His feminine traits and maid attire leads people to mistakenly identify him as a girl, but he’s actually a male. [4] While the details are not clear, it is implied Ozen was the one that decided for him to dress like a maid. [5]
In his prior life in Jeseku, Marulk wore the so-called «Moon Outfit». These long-established children’s clothes are worn in the far western country of Jeseku and are believed to conceal «Children of the Shadows» from the sun. The Moon clothes consist out of a headwear with a veil covering the back of the child, a formal dress with insignias on it, and formal shoes. [6]
He is a rather shy, but polite, individual who misses having the chance to talk with people of the same age because he manages the Seeker Camp. Though he does fear Ozen at times, he knows her well and trusts her. [1]
He’s very reluctant to talk about his clothing. When Jiruo mentioned it, Marulk became very nervous, despite greeting Jiruo as an old friend only moments before. [7]
Early Life
At some point in his past, Marulk was involved in a crash of an airship in the Abyss in which the crew, including his father, lost their life and was later found by Ozen. [8] Following this event, he chose to stay in the Abyss and became Ozen’s disciple. [1]
Seeker Camp Arc
When Riko and Reg come to the Seeker Camp, Marulk observes them with the telescope until Ozen instructs him to lower the camp’s gondola down so that the two can enter the camp. [9]
Interested in finding out how two Red Whistle Delvers arrived at the Seeker Camp of their own merit, Ozen instructs Marulk to lend an ear to Riko and Reg in her stead; her reasoning was that it would be easier for children to talk to children. At Ozen’s instructions, Marulk gives the two of them Blue Whistles; Ozen notes that it would be troublesome to explain the presence of two Red Whistles in the Seeker Camp, so for the time being they will wear Blue Whistles. [10]
Marulk shows Reg and Riko around the Seeker Camp and the three become friends. [11]
The next morning, following Riko wetting Reg’s bed, Ozen walks into Riko explaining to Marulk and Reg what caused her to lose control of her bladder — a strange monster. [12]
Later on, Marulk witnesses, in dismay, Ozen’s and Reg’s fight. Ozen instructs him to stay put and not to interfere. As the fight continues, one-sidedly in Ozen’s favor, Marulk panics more and more, until he decides to disobey Ozen’s order and hurries to get the other Subterranean Bandits to stop the fight. [13] [14]
Afterwards, it is reveald that Ozen was trying to provoke Reg and Riko into a fight in order to test if they are ready to make their way further down the Abyss. While she criticizes how Reg and Riko acted in the situation of conflict she praises Marulk, as he was the only one to take the right action in the situation; but also remarks that she will still punish him later for disobeying her instructions to stay put. [15]
After finishing her lecture, Ozen instructs Reg and Riko to stay ten days in the forest behind the Seeker Camp as survival training. Reg and Riko return to the Seeker Camp after ten days and Marulk congratulates them on passing as most people don’t even manage to make it even a week. [16]
After the training, Ozen tells Reg and Riko the Abyss causes a person’s sense of time to get lost to the point of the possibility time moving far slower in the lower layers. She also shares secrets only known to White Whistle Delvers with them, and gives the Artifact, Blaze Reap, to Riko. Afterwards, Riko and Reg leave the Seeker Camp to advance down to the 3 rd layer and Marulk, with the rest of the Subterranean Bandits see them off. [17]
At some undefined point in time, Nat helped Marulk find Laffi’s Shop in Orth. [18]
Basic Delving Skills
Marulk has been trained in the basics of delving and displays enough skill and expertise to prove to be a Blue Whistle Delver, despite his young age. As a direct apprentice of a White Whistle, he is considerably more skilled at delving than kids his age and he is capable of surviving on his own in the less hazardous sections of the 2 nd layer for at least a couple of days. [1] [19]
Telescope
Marulk is in charge of the telescope inside the camp and is often keeping watch of the surroundings so that a gondola can be lowered when a Delver shows up. [20]

Synopsis
Reg and Riko ride the gondola up to the Seeker Camp, where Ozen greets them. Riko introduces herself and promptly vomits due to ascension strain. Ozen notes that while the effects are lighter in the camp, they are still difficult for children. Ozen already seems familiar with Riko and Reg. [1]
Ozen examines Lyza’s whistle and confirms her own identity. Riko immediately thanks Ozen for helping to carry her in the Curse-Warding Box. Ozen coldly admits that she considered abandoning Riko in favor of securing the Unheard Bell instead. Ozen notes that as a Red Whistle Delver, Riko should not even be here. Riko explains that she came because her mother called for her, shows Ozen the message from Lyza’s letter, and offers to leave once she has learned a little about her mother. In response, Ozen orders her apprentice, a child named Marulk, to hear their story in her place, and will speak to them the next day. Marulk gives Blue Whistles to Riko and Reg. Ozen says this is only so no one will question why Riko and Reg are in the Seeker Camp. In addition, this privilege is only for the duration of their stay in the camp, and she will keep Lyza’s whistle until they leave. [2]
Marulk guides Riko and Reg through the camp and tells them its history. Marulk and Reg manage to find some common ground, and Marulk shares his history: Ozen saved him and made him her apprentice, so that he wouldn’t have to return to the surface, as his eyes are too sensitive to light. Riko guesses that despite Ozen’s cold exterior, she is a good master. Marulk agrees, and invites Riko and Reg to stay at the Seeker Camp so he can spend more time with them, as there is no one else around his age. Riko reluctantly refuses, because she is concerned about her mother. Marulk happily replies that in that case, they should do all their talking now. [3]
The next morning, Riko is embarrassed because she wet the bed. Marulk admits he used to do the same not so long ago, but Reg is puzzled as to why Riko was in his bed. Riko explains when she got up last night to look for a toilet, she found a moving, headless corpse and immediately hid in Reg’s bed. Marulk and Reg both agree that is impossible, though Reg does more out of fear than anything else. [4]
Ozen arrives, and Riko apologizes, but Ozen merely seems amused that «the brat and Habolg» didn’t tell Riko anything. She invites Riko to follow her for more information, or to forget what she saw. Marulk advises Riko not to follow, but encouraged by Reg grabbing her hand, Riko follows Ozen, accompanied by Reg and Marulk. [5]
Ozen tells Riko that Lyza is dead, as she found Lyza’s whistle and letter at a grave in the 4 th layer. Riko tries to insist that Lyza wrote a message to her, but Ozen replies that Lyza’s handwriting is completely different and she would never write such a thing. Riko still wishes to confirm Lyza’s status for herself. [6]
Ozen takes the group to her chamber, in the center of which is a large cube. Riko guesses that it is the Curse-Warding Box. Ozen explains that, contrary to common belief, the box does not protect against the Curse. In fact, anything placed in the box still gets cursed and dies. But once it does, it starts moving again. Ozen learned this from Riko: Riko was stillborn, but when Ozen put her in the box, Riko started to move again. Ozen reveals this is where the headless corpse came from: she put some of the meat from her meal in the box the previous night. But in that case, it eventually stopped moving, and she wonders when Riko will stop as well. Feeling Ozen has gone too far, Reg steps in and demands that Ozen stop tormenting Riko. [7]
