Via the artistic tutelage of Chip Zdarsky (writer of PETER PARKER: THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN, STAR-LORD, and HOWARD THE DUCK), readers will get a step-by-step guide to illustrating their favorite characters. How “expert” that artistic tutelage will be…is less certain.
We sat down with Chip and Editor Nick Lowe to chat about how these covers came to life.
Marvel.com: Nick, when was the first time you ever came across a how-to-draw featurette in a comic—and what did it mean to you? And then how did this project come about?
Nick Lowe: The book How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way was huge for me back in middle school and high school—and still is today. Let’s be honest: John Buscema is one of the most underrated artists in comic history. He could draw anything and you’d hear these amazing stories about him, but you see how he approached the work and it’s just stunning.
We generally do Sketch Variant covers for our big launches and when PETER PARKER: THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN came around, it hit me that we could do something a little different…especially with someone as truly bizarre as Chip, our writer. So I emailed Chip and before I knew it he sent in the hilarious How-To-Draw Spider-Man cover. [Editor-in-Chief] Axel Alonso saw it and loved it and he had the idea to roll it out into all these variants.
Marvel.com: Chip, what did you think when they approached you about this?
Chip Zdarsky: Well, like Nick says, we were gearing up for issue one of Peter Parker and, you know, launching a Spider-Man book is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so I told Nick that I’d love to do one of the variant covers.
Marvel.com: Nick, what made Chip the go-to man for these covers? What are his strengths with this kind of work?
Nick Lowe: He’s a very troubled individual, so I knew I could exploit those troubles here. His strengths certainly aren’t art, that’s for sure, but I guess he’s pretty funny.
Marvel.com: Chip, there’s got to be more to this story. What do you remember about the Spidey editorial team’s reaction to your interest in doing a variant for the book?
Chip Zdarsky: Never heard back. Which, you know, stung, since they had 80-90 variants for issue one. But, I forgave Nick, ‘cause he’s a really busy guy, spending most of his day telling me “no” to my story ideas. So it probably slipped his mind to tell me “no” for my variant.
Then, just before they were sending the covers to the printer, Nick contacted me. He said they were doing one of the blank sketch variants, but that I could maybe write a fun little thing on the back cover before they sent it to the printer. Was it out of pity for me? Probably. Would I exploit that pity? Yeah. Yeah, I would.
So I sent him a How-To-Draw guide for Spidey instead. It seemed to fit in with the theme of the blank covers. Nick loved it and told me I’m his favorite person at Marvel; more than Mark Waid, Dan Slott, his assistant editors Alison and Devin, etc., which was really nice to hear.
So, the Spider-Man cover came out, and people seemed to like it! I figured at that point Marvel would greenlight a How-To-Draw movie and I’d be set for life. But instead, I got a text message from Axel Alonso, Editor-in-Chief—I call those Axts—telling me that I was now drawing twenty of those covers.
Marvel.com: Nick, do you have a favorite cover?
Nick Lowe: I love the Lockjaw one a lot. I love the DAREDEVIL one, too. But they’re all so great.
Marvel.com: Chip, do you have a personal favorite?
Chip Zdarsky: I’m pretty happy with the DAREDEVIL one, which has made its way online already. But so far my favorite is the PUNISHER one, ’cause it’s really tricky to capture the soul of a killing machine. But I think I succeeded.
Marvel.com: How long did a typical cover take you to create from beginning to end?
Chip Zdarsky: In a lot of ways, my entire life has been leading to this job, so I would say each one takes a lifetime. Or, like, half an hour. Depending on how you look at it.
Marvel.com: Nick, any chance that something like this could be expanded upon in the future?
Nick Lowe: I sure hope so! I think they’re so fun and I can’t wait for a generation of burgeoning artists to be led down the wrong path! These are the complete inversion of my beloved How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way!
Marvel.com: We’ll give the last words on these variants to the writer-artist—Chip, given a hypothetical chance to do more of these, which other characters would you love to do?

But no. IT shows you how to ink, draw action, start with stick figures, where to position, and what draws attention. It shows you what artists at Marvel strive to do to make their comic books and panels stand out for the enjoyment of the reader.
A very interesting book that I think would be awesome for any kid 13+, it shows you what you need to do to improve at your craft.
While, I’m not an artist, it was super fun to go through and see all the techniques. I even drew a stick figure or two.
Lately, my son and I have been bonding over superheros and while I don’t have the attention-span to draw the Marvel Way. I know there are boys and girls out there that will eat this book up.

This is a very good little figure drawing book. I teach art in high school and have had all sorts of students buy it after seeing it in my class, but it would be appropriate for kids from late elementary up. I keep several copies of it out on TAKS testing days and kids with little to no drawing experience will happily follow the step by step to draw Spidey, but is is not just a step to step book. There is real, accurate, and practical advice about how to master the figure for more serious beginn This is a very good little figure drawing book. Classic instruction which started many artists on that long path (I bought a used copy, myself, as a child). Combine with a little Loomis, Hogarth, and some figure drawing and you are on your way to being a real talent.
This is pretty much an introduction to the Marvel ‘house style’ at the time, but certainly still applicable.

It doesn’t stop with proper tools, formulas, and methods. It even approaches professionalism and best practices. All of this without going over your head, or talking down to the audience.
The coolest thing about HTDCTMW is It’s really a book about visual story telling that happens to use the comic book idiom. Pacing, mood, dynamism, framing, composition, it’s all there along with a glossary of industry terms, list of materials and constructive anatomy methods, that are still as relevant today as they were in 1977.
If you have children or young relatives who show the spark of talent for the entertainment art fields of story boarding, concept art/design, or sequential art of any kind, this is the book for them. If you want to pick up a book of sound advice and technique basics, over and over again and just be reminded of how fun illustration really is, this book is for you.

The thing is, I was a creative bastard back then. I used to draw stuff, build stuff, do stuff. I had tons of weird hobbies that I really really miss now. A lonely awkward kid living in a world of his own imagination. Life used to be good. God, I wanna relive those days.

uhhhh. no, Marvel artists study ANATOMY before making it up with bubbles on sticks. copying other artists’ renderings is a vital part of learning to draw, but that alone will not get you working for Marvel and is not how to draw «the Marvel way»

The book is okay. I think it’s clearly outdated, because it was written in the 70’s, so it’s probably targeted to children and teens who wanted to start drawing comics JUST like the Marvel ones, that’s alright; it could be helpful if you’re a beginner and are looking for tips and a little bit of theory to start. Anyways, it’s definitely not a good idea to take this book as a guide for real anatomy, in the chapter about human heads and faces the proportions are based only on what at the times was The book is okay. Anyways, it’s definitely not a good idea to take this book as a guide for real anatomy, in the chapter about human heads and faces the proportions are based only on what at the times was considered great looking, I was specially shocked with the part about portraying female faces, the author emphasizes that it’s esential to keep the exact proportions declared there, because if not he female wouldn’t be beautiful. (. ) obviously the proportions were for drawing white girls with an upturned, thin nose. It literally tells you not to draw different looking eyebrows, or noses with bumps or large nostrils. Like.. what?
Anyways, this is a good book if you’re a beginner who is looking for a guide with the basics to start drawing. or if you’re someone who wants to copy Marvel comics and draw nothing else than Marvel white characters who look all the same.
In short, I would advice this book to beginners (not sure about absolute beginners though), people who want to learn the basics of persepctive, those who want to add a little bit of more dynamism to their figures, to learn composition (this part was actually quite helpful) and to learn the basics of anatomy distribution; I would never recommend it to someone who wants to learn anatomy itself, or good character design theory.

I am an illustration student and I got this on amazon in the hope it would awake the memory of my ‘anatomy and perspective for comics’ class and take me a bit deeper.
No such thing.
The book stays superficial with more images than explanations and it does not go past the bare bones.
Perspective was barely mentioned in the chapter dedicated to it. The most useful part was on the proportions to respect when sketching a face.
