Basic Doom Mod Installation Guide

This guide will cover the following:

Basic Prerequisites to get started

How to install a source port and launcher

How to create a functional load order

Note: All launchers are different and all mods are different so if there is a better load order or different steps taken to achieve a working load order from that launcher or that mod, use those instead.

Maps → Music Mods → Main/Gameplay Mods → Addons → Custom HUDs.

Maps come first in order for Project Brutality or any mods to override the necessary files to make it compatible. examples: Hell On the Earth Remastered (DOOM 2 Remastered), Sapphire, Prison Labs v666, Project Brutality Playground

Music mods come after maps so they can override any music that the map may have. Example: Doom Metal Soundtrack

Project Brutality and other mods sit here so they can override the map files but don’t override addon files. These mods don’t tend to mix well. Other Examples: Brutal Doom, Hideous Destructor, Beautiful Doom

Supported addons/mods come after your main mod so they don’t get overwritten and cause errors. Examples: Glory Kills, commander shotgun

Heads Up Display addons (HUDs) come last in order to get all the necessary items and mechanics integrated into the HUD. Examples: HHXRTCHUD, CATS VISOR, nekos hud, UDV

Installing Project Brutality

How To Download

You will need the latest version of GZDooM 1 (or Delta Touch for Android 2 ) and either a copy of the one of the official IWADs 3 4 or Freedoom phase 1+2. To download the latest build, scroll up to the top and click the green button labeled Code ▾ then click Download Zip. If you are on mobile and don’t see a button, you’ll need to turn on desktop view. If you are on destop, maximize the window.

When loading more than just PB, It is highly recommended you use a Front-end Launcher, such as ZDL, DoomRunner, or SSGL

Feedback and Bug Reporting

While we would love to hear your opinions and ideas, Issues are reserved for bug reports only. Please make sure that the bug is with the mod itself and not due to any add-ons. The team is not responsible for any addons. Even if the add-on is made by a member of the dev team, it is not our resposibility to fix it, but instead is up to the add-on’s creator on whether or not they fix it. Also make sure the issue has not already been posted.

Any suggestions, opinions, or questions should be posted on the discord server. Don’t forget to check the rules and faq channels, as well as each channel’s pins and description.

NOTE: MOTION BLUR ON SPRITES IS AN ARTISTIC CHOICE, NOT LAZINESS. NO, WE WILL NOT CHANGE IT.

Looking for add-ons or a place to share your personal PB add-on? Between the discord server, The Project Brutality Website, and The Brutal Repository have you covered. Just please respect other modders and use proper modder’s etiquette.

If the Dev team asks you to remove something using mod resources, please do so without issue.

Project Brutality (For GZDoom only)*
Project Brutality 3.0 (most recent version is 3.0 located here
DoomVisor HUD v2.13 here
Latest GZDoom v4.5.0 here [zdoom.org]

^ Download Necessary Files ^

1. Copy/Move ‘PB3Zv0.8.5.pk3’ over to the ‘base’ folder located within the doom 2 steam folder
2. Run the game once to have the ‘gzdoom-(YourPCUserNameHere).ini’ created automatically.
3. Open the ‘gzdoom-(YourPCUserNameHere).ini’ and scroll down to where you see [doom.Autoload]
4. Type or Copy/Paste ‘Path=PB3Zv0.8.5.pk3’ right under [doom.Autoload]
5. Rinse and repeat for however many Doom games you want to apply this to and for however many mods you have installed(The Ultimate Doom, Doom II, Final Doom, and Master Levels of Doom)
6. If prompted, Run doom through original DOS (If you select play Doom 2 then it will run the new Bethesda doom and any installed mods will not be ran)

Visor Mod
*note (This part can get a bit confusing)

1. Extract Contents of the ‘Ultimate_DoomVisor_v2.13’ Zip file to somewhere where you can easily access each file (I recommend putting the contents on you desktop)

2. Look at the names of each ‘.pk3’ file in the folder. Pay attention to the letter each ‘.pk3’ file has been assigned (eg. UDV_v2.13_A_BASE.pk3) (UDV_v2.13_B_VISOR_Alt_1.pk3)

3. BEFORE dragging the ‘.pk3’ files into the doom ‘base’ folder read the key below to see which files you can and can’t put in

The BASE «A» module is required for full functionality. You should only ever have one(1) «A» module
loaded. The «A» module is the BASE module with all the main HUD components and weapon scripts.

“B” Modules are optional alternate graphic packs for UDV itself You should only ever have one(1) “B” module loaded at any time and it will override the standard visor graphics. It is only necessary if you want to change from the basic default DoomVisor graphics.

You can load any number of the «C», or “D” modules. They include optional add-ons such as lower
quality bullethole effects to increase performance, replacement mugshot graphics, ambient
music/sounds, alternate fonts, or to display the correct key card colors when playing with the megawad Knee Deep in ZDoom.

4. After you fully understand what you have read above you can play around with each ‘.pk3’ file to see what they do but for them to actually load you must follow the same steps with ‘Project Brutality’ and under [doom.Autoload] you must write (Path=(Chosen file name.pk3)) for each one of the visor files you are using.

TIP* Make sure all of the Visor path lines are after your main mod ‘Path line’ eg.
‘Path=PB3Zv0.8.5.pk3’
‘UDV_v2.13_A_BASE.pk3’

How To Download

This is the primary repository for collaborative efforts between Doom developers on Project Brutality. This is the bleeding-edge version that is constantly being developed on, and not meant in any way shape or form to be representative of the final version of the mod.

Я тут внезапно для себя нашел и скачал Project Brutality 3.0 Test Build, что является тестовым билдом популярного и всеми любимого мода. Сразу скажу: эта версия мода хоть и считается на текущий момент самой актуальной, но она может работать нестабильно ввиду своего статуса – повторюсь, перед тобой тестовая сборка, которая, впрочем, у меня после получасовой игры не показала каких-либо глюков или ошибок.

Мне даже показалось, что по сравнению с официально выпущенной версией мода Project Brutality 3.0 тестовая сборка работает несколько шустрей, подтянули оптимизацию – меньше просадки кадров, меньше фризов и в целом никакого негатива за время игры у меня не возникло.

В качестве иного варианта запуска модификации просто перетащи мышкой файл мода Project_Brutality-master.pk3 на файл порта gzdoom.exe (мод должен лежать в одной папке с портом).

Признаться, каких-то глубоких нововведений я не знаю ввиду того, что описания тестовых сборок нигде нет, а Discord мода Project Brutality давно закрылся и вообще не очень понятна ситуация вокруг модификации, но судя по трекеру разработчиков последний раз файлы обновлялись меньше двух недель назад, поэтому можно предположить, что работа над проектом хоть и медленно, но идет.

После публикации данного поста мне стало известно, что прежний официальный Дискорд мода Проджект Бруталити был удален одним из разработчиков под ником Louismustdie555 по причине того, что ему стало скучно. Вот ведь гад. Впрочем, это не помешает дальней разработке модификации.

К слову, мне показалось, что импы (Imp) стали вести себя куда умней и агрессивней – постоянно стаями ползают по потолку, раньше они как-то больше по земле передвигались. Планирую на днях запустить летсплей Doom 2 с тестовой версией мода на каком-нибудь интересном WAD’e, следите за обновлениями!
