Searchlight Pictures Dates Sam Mendes’ ‘Empire Of Light’ For Q4

Searchlight said today that the next movie from Oscar-winning American Beauty filmmaker Sam Mendes, Empire of Light, is coming out on December 9.

The release pattern hasn’t been specified yet. Last year Searchlight went with Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley before Christmas and platformed Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch.

The drama romance Empire of Light, which Mendes also wrote, is set in and around a beautiful old cinema on the South Coast of England in the 1980s. Colin Firth, Olivia Colman, Toby Jones, Sara Stewart, Michael Ward and Tanya Moodie star.

Searchlight has dated for theatrical for the remainder of the year See How They Run (September 16), The Banshees of Inisherin (October 21) and The Menu (November 18).

Searchlight’s ‘See How They Run’ Going Earlier In September – Update

Update: With the lack of major studio product in the fall, and Lionsgate’s Judy Blume movie, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret heading to the end of April 2023, Searchlight is going to have a moderate theatrical release with their comedy caper See How They Run, and moving it up to Sept. 16.

On its new date, See How They Run will share the marquee with Tri-Star’s Viola Davis epic, The Woman King. Both are playing in the second weekend of New Line’s Stephen King movie Salem’s Lot.

With the box office rebound raging, the release schedule is going to get quiet come late August through late October, that is unless Salem’s Lot is a secret weapon. Best for studios to start moving up big product.

From ‘Nope’ to ‘The Fabelmans,’ Oscar Season Takes Off Soon With Dozens of Potential Contenders

As of June 30, we’re at the halfway point for 2022 — and for the Oscar eligibility year. There are dozens of possibilities coming up and many familiar elements — plenty of biopics, a reliance on fall film festivals, a heavy dose of streamers — but this could be an unusual year.

In the first six months of the year, A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick” seem likely. They would have been Oscar longshots a decade ago, but both should do well since voters’ tastes are changing.

Also notable this year: The roster of directors is far more inclusive, in terms of gender and race, than in the past.

A desperate Hollywood producer sets out to turn a popular play into a film. The only problem? The play’s star actors are killed off one by one.

The official logline reads: “In the West End of 1950s London, plans for a movie version of a smash hit play come to an abrupt halt after a pivotal member of the crew is murdered. In addition to showcasing Daniel Craig’s dialectical range, Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” proved that the lone detective whodunit is still alive and kicking. It grossed over 300 million at the box-office (on a budget of 40 million), and its critical reception was nothing short of adoring (read ThePlaylist’s A-grade review here). (It also picked up an Original Screenplay nomination at the 92nd Academy Awards.) Since then, other sharp-witted private eyes have taken to the screen—from the time-honored mustache in “Death On the Nile” to the less conventional Eloise in “Last Night In Soho”—with equally warm receptions.
