Tell Me About Yourself

Текст к уроку

I had a mostly happy childhood. My father and mother didn’t have a lot of money, but we were never worried about keeping up with the Joneses. I wasn’t much into sports like my brothers were, but I enjoyed reading and listening to music growing up. I went to grade school near my house, and then to a high school about 2 miles from where I lived.

After graduating from high school, I went on to the University of Minnesota to get my bachelor’s degree. It took me a while to learn the ropes at the university, but I finally graduated nearly 6 years later. Better late than never, as my father used to say. I then went to Mexico for a couple of years to teach English and to study Spanish.

When I returned, I decided to become a teacher, so I went back to school to get my Master’s degree. After teaching for a few years, I was offered a job in California, so I moved to Los Angeles in 1991. After working here a few years, I went back to school (again!) to get my Ph.D. I was starting to become a professional student.

Well, I finished up my degree in four years, and then taught at the university for several years. Now, I work at a small research organization here in L.A. I am happily married, and I still enjoy reading and listening to music, and, of course, hosting ESL Podcast.

In this guide, we’re going to talk through why interviewers ask this question. We will then explore a few tips you can use to answer the question “Tell me about yourself.” in an interview, with reference to an example.

Why Do Interviewers Ask “Tell Me About Yourself”?

This interview question is so common because it’s a good transition into the rest of a job interview. When you start a job interview, it can feel quite tense—you’re sitting there, waiting to be asked dozens of questions by someone you may never have met.

This question “breaks the ice,” and helps to ease into some of the more difficult questions that you may be asked further down the line.

In addition, asking this question gives interviewers and hiring managers the ability to learn more about who you are, both as a person and as a professional. Because there are no specific points that you need to mention to respond to this question, you can choose to mention whatever features and experience you think an employer should know about.

What to Include in Your Answer to “Tell Me About Yourself”

“Tell me about yourself,” as we mentioned earlier, is a broad question. Instead of thinking about how to craft an answer to this exact question, you may find it helpful to consider a few more specific questions that relate to who you are as a worker.

Here are the main points you should make in answering this question:

The average bootcamp grad spent less than six months in career transition, from starting a bootcamp to finding their first job.

There is no “right” way to answer this question. For instance, if you have a particular skill that you want to highlight in depth, you may want to spend more time discussing where you have been, and spend less time talking about where you want to go. It’s up to you!

How to Answer “Tell Me About Yourself”

Like any interview question, before you commence an interview, it is best to take some time to prepare for how you intend to respond. With this question, there are a few things you should keep in mind when you are crafting your response.

Your main goal in answering this question is to start crafting a narrative about yourself. Your response should be kept short and sweet—no longer than two minutes—and give an employer a brief summary of who you are.

Here are a few tips you should keep in mind when responding to this question:

#1: Discuss past experiences related to the job

When an interviewer asks you to tell them about yourself, they don’t want to hear a list of facts about who you are and what experience you have. Rather, they want to learn about the specific experiences you have had that qualify you for the position you are applying for.

Before you go into an interview read over the job description again and figure out what the company is looking for in a candidate for the position. What qualities does the job description mention? Which of those qualities do you have?

If you can anchor your response to the needs of a company, you can make it easier for the hiring manager or interviewer to piece together how your skills align with the needs of the company. The earlier the interviewer starts to hear how you can provide value to the company, the more likely they are to want to keep engaging with you as a candidate.

#2: Focus on your strengths

This question is an excellent opportunity to talk about the strengths and skills you have, and how they make you a unique candidate for the job.

As you start preparing to answer this question, you should think about the main strengths that you have. Are you good at creative thinking? Do you thrive in fast-paced working environments? Mentioning these qualities in your answer will both impress an employer, and help them learn more about what you consider to be your main features.

Ideally, you should back up your strengths with an example. For instance, if you exercised team working skills in your last job, you should give an example of when you were an effective contributor on a team project.

#3: Talk about your passions and goals

One way to catch the attention of an employer is to discuss your passions and goals in your answer to this question.

The average candidate may list their core strengths and make links between those strengths and the position for which they have applied. But if you want to go above and beyond, you can spend some time discussing your passions and goals.

You don’t need to go into too much depth—you only have a limited amount of time—but giving some brief context on why you are passionate about a field or industry can help make a more positive impression on an interviewer. After all, the more passionate you are, the more likely you are to be a dedicated and hard worker.

#4: Keep it short

This is not an opportunity to recite everything on your resume. The interviewer or hiring manager should already have read your resume before the interview, and in your response they will be seeking new information. If they wanted to hear what was on your resume, they could just read it again.

Your response to this question should be focused on the specific strengths and past experiences you think are relevant to the job. Once you have given the relevant background, you should stop and let the interview continue.

There is usually no specific time frame during which you need to answer this question, but a good rule is that you should aim to talk for no more than two minutes. There is also a risk that if you talk for too long, you will lose sight of the main points you want to make. This could lead to rambling in the interview, which is never seen as a good sign.

#5: Know the interviewers

Before you start giving your response to this question, you should think about the people you’re talking to.

If you are in your first interview, you may be talking with a hiring manager or a recruiter. These people will likely be more interested in your soft skills and whether you would be a good culture fit for the organization. So, you would want to craft your answer to this question in line with their expectations: to learn more about your soft skills.

In a second interview, on the other hand, you may be talking with a more technical audience who is qualified in your field of interest. In this case, talking about your hard skills may be best, because your audience will be more familiar with the topics you are discussing.

#6: Practice

This interview question can feel intimidating because it’s broad and open-ended. You’ll want to take some time before your interview to practice a response, and consider the exact points that you want to convey.

One great way to practice is to ask a friend or a family member to listen to your response. This will give you an opportunity to receive feedback from other people. They will be able to tell you if your response is too long, or too short, or misses out on a few key points that they feel best describe who you are.

Interviewers can often tell whether or not you have memorized an answer to this question. If you are still early in your career, this doesn’t send a negative signal; you’re still finding the ropes. But if you have more experience, it may lead an interviewer to question your ability to talk about your strengths and weaknesses.

Example Answer to “Tell Me About Yourself”

Seeing an example answer to this question may make it easier for you to figure out what to say. Here is an example of a response to this question from a candidate applying for a job in customer success:

I’d be happy to! I have always enjoyed helping other people, even going as far back as volunteering as a hall monitor in high school. When I started college, I started to realize that I enjoyed business, especially working with customers. It excites me to be able to talk with a wide range of different people each day and help them solve their problems.

In my first job, I worked as a customer success associate. This gave me an opportunity to refine my skills by talking with customers and helped me learn more about how to provide a better experience to customers. I was also assigned a few bigger accounts to work on independently, once I built up some experience.

Last year, I moved on to work as a customer success associate at a new company. In this role, I was able to work on larger accounts for enterprise customers, which helped me acquire a broader range of skills.

I have learned that I work best while helping businesses, because I enjoy analyzing business use cases and figuring out how I can help a company meet their needs using the product I am supporting them with. Now that I am looking to expand my skills in enterprise sales, I think working at your business would be an invaluable experience.

Conclusion

Your answer to this question could be one of the first impressions you make on an employer, so you need to do everything you can to make it count.

Before you start your interview, make sure you have prepared for this question. Think about where you have been, what you are doing now, and where you are going, and link your experiences to the position for which you are applying.

By following the tips in this article, you should have no trouble crafting a response to this question that impresses an employer in a job interview.

The question itself is very simple, but answering it takes great focus and good choice of words. Also, this question is a one sided gun, being able to answer this question does not necessarily mean you will win the job, but not being able to will surely send out of the game.

So how can one answer this simple yet difficult obstacle? Given below are a few simple ways in which anyone can ace this question in any job interview.

Understand the Importance

While many take this question very lightly, the importance of this question cannot be stressed enough. In this question, the interviewer is expecting the interviewee to answer this question that is logically profitable to the firm; everything you present should be positive and effective to the firm in some or the other way.

Moreover, as mentioned before, this question is a one sided gun, the interviewer can determine your eligibility on the answer you give. There is no guarantee that you will win the job if you answered it right as there are other factors too that are important like qualifications, past working record, availability, etc. However, not being able to answer it right will cost you the job most of the time.

On the other hand, there is a positive side of this question too. This question is also your chance to show the interviewer how good and useful you actually are. If this opportunity is used properly, there is a high probability that the rest of the interview will be smooth.

The ice-breaker Question of the interview

For beginners, this question is also called the “ice-breaker” since it is a good way to start a conversation. The interviewer is expecting to clear the tension in the room so that the rest of the interview can progress comfortably. Along with it, the interviewer is also expecting you to give valuable information that is useful to the firm. Some of the basic points they are looking after are given below.

Understanding these basic points can help you construct a quality answer that can easily impress the interviewer. At the same time, ignoring these will project an impression that is not valuable to the firm in any manner.

Information your answer should have

So what actually can you speak about? There are plenty of things that you can talk about, but maintaining logic is the most important part it. For instance, you cannot say that your favorite sport is chess while you have great leadership qualities, but you can talk about any team sport with leadership qualities to get extra points. You can keep in mind the following points while you are answering this question.

Mistakes to Avoid

It is natural to get a bit anxious during the interview, plus the pressure is almost on top. In these conditions mistakes are natural; however, you cannot afford these mistakes. Knowing what can be common mistakes in the interview beforehand will help you avoid them greatly in the real time. Here are a few mistakes that most of candidates do in an interview.

Practice makes it perfect and hence, the best preparation you can do is practice. On the time of interview, your answer should be fluent, confident and logical to hear. You can follow the simple practice methods given below to brush up your answer before the day approaches.

Tell me about yourself is the most important question in the interview. If you are unable to impress the interviewer in this one given opportunity, then it can be your last opportunity. Answering it with confidence and in a systematic order that is logical to hear is the best way to tackle this question in the interview. Also, practicing this answer before the interview is very important as this question can be the one to change your life.

Give a summary of your work experiences not in a particular order. The voice should be audible and clear stating your strengths that are relevant to the job requirement.

For example, you could say, “My education in biology and chemistry, as well as my work history are evidence of my success in the pharmaceutical sales industry. I’ve demonstrated my ability to manage large territories such as the one for this position and motivate sales representatives to reach higher revenue goals, which is a priority for this position. In short, I’m a hard worker and I’m pleased to be considered by an organization with such a solid business reputation.”

Be a good listener and be attentive to all the questions coming in your way. If the question about your qualification or background are not asked once you start the interview, the interviewer might be trying to know you as a person. He might be trying to make you comfortable for the rest of the interview. You can ask the employer if he is willing to get the work details in a particular order or just willing to know the kind of employee you are and what are your expectations.

Note if the interviewer is going through your resume. If she puts up a question about you while going through your resume, accept that she is looking a reply about your work experience. Frame your answer from your first job and then move towards your current position or role. Providing the answer in a chronology will give them a clear view about why you applied to this job. Apart from your roles and responsibilities let the employer know how you interact with others and positive attitude you have.

If you feel that you have given much detail about your qualifications and the background. Give a halt to this question and try to finish with a light note. You shall make them clear that you have given a lot many details than you imagined and you have the qualifications and experience required to do the job. Don’t just repeat the same answer for every question regarding your background and decide the boundaries for every question. Do remember that the employer is not willing to know your life story.

Cracking any interview requires confidence, skill and knowledge. You may have the right skill and knowledge for the job, but sometimes if you are not confident enough, you will not be selected. Therefore, it is extremely important to be absolutely confident before going to attend any interview.

Now, during the course of the interview, you can showcase how confident you are to the HR manager, by answering a few particular interview questions. Questions like “Tell me about yourself”, “Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?” and “Do you think you can handle the job well?” are the ones that majorly test your confidence.

The best way to answer tell me about yourself or introduce yourself is to:

The best way to describe yourself in the interview is to start with your current position. If you are a fresher, talk about and have no work experience start with that. Compliment it with the skills, qualifications, and internship experience. Align the answer with the job requirement and then you can talk about the rest of things.

If you are currently employed, talk about your designation, your role, and how you help your current employer with reduced TAT and increased revenue. Talk about the skills and expertise that you have acquired and are willing to share with the company.

Depending on what you say and how you present it, this question can decide the direction of the interview. Use this opportunity to influence the interviewer in your favor.

When you tell your interviewer how you got there, and you talk about your achievements, learnings, and experience that helps the hiring manager assess your growth path and how well you have been doing in your career. And then tell him about what you are looking to do next and why you are applying for the job.

We’ll help you prepare the best answer to this question “tell me about yourself”. We’ll also help you with some sample answers and with the best possible way to describe yourself.

Many candidates, who do not understand the importance of this innocent but tricky interview question, mostly unprepared, skewer themselves by rambling, talking about their life stories, delving into ancient work history, or personal matters.

Important points before you start answering “Tell Me About Yourself”:

The best way to describe yourself is to start with your skills and tell them why you are well qualified for the position.

Remember that it’s important for all successful interviews to match your qualifications, experience, and skills to what the interviewer is looking for. In other words, find at least 5 words to describe yourself and you must sell what the buyer is buying, not what you are selling. This is the single most important strategy in job hunting.

So, before you answer “Tell me about yourself” or any question it’s imperative that you research, read, and find everything about your interviewer, try to uncover your interviewer’s requirements, position details, and the problem that they are trying to solve or goal.

And based on the research you must frame the question in line with the requirement.

To do so, take these two steps:

1. Do all the homework you can before the interview to uncover your interviewer’s requirements and position (not the generalized needs of the industry or company)

2. Ask for a more complete description of the offered position. You might say: “I have several accomplishments and skills to talk about, but I want to make the best use of our time together and talk directly to your needs. To help me do, that, could you tell me more about the most important priorities of this position? All I know is what I (heard from the recruiter, read in the classified ad, etc.)”

Then, You must ALWAYS follow up with a second and possibly, third question, to draw out your interviewer’s needs even more.

Surprisingly, it’s usually this second or third question that will tell you what the interviewer is most looking for.

You might simply enquire, “And in addition to that?…” or, “Is there anything else you see as essential to success in this position? Remember, This process will not feel that easy or natural at first, because sometimes it is easier simply to answer questions, but only if you uncover the interviewer’s wants and needs will your answers make the most sense.

Find a friend and practice the interview well in advance. Practice asking these key questions before giving your answers, the process will feel more natural and you will be light years ahead of the other competing candidates.

After you have found out what the employer is looking for, describe why the requirements of this job bear striking parallels to tasks you’ve succeeded at before.

When the interviewer demands you to describe yourself, you are not supposed to talk about your personal life or your favorite movie star, or what you like doing in summer.

Tell me about yourself is the first opportunity for you to describe your career objectives and goals.

With a little smile and a truck full of confidence, Be sure to talk with specific examples of your responsibilities and especially your achievements in your past assignments, all of which are geared to present yourself as a perfect match for the needs he has just described.
