It’s easy to change your username, or handle, using Twitter in a web browser or via its mobile app.

Change Your Twitter Handle on a Computer

To use Twitter’s website to make a new name, you’ll go through the More menu on the main page.

Navigate to Twiter.com, log in to your account, and select More from the menu on the left.

Select Settings and Privacy.

Select Your Account and then Account Information.

Type in your Twitter password and select Confirm.

Select Username.

Under Change Username, enter a new handle and select Save. You’ve set your new Twitter handle.

Twitter will alert you to unavailable usernames and offer suggestions.

Change Your Twitter Handle With the Twitter Mobile App

This process is the same whether you’re using the Twitter app on an iOS or Android device.

Launch Twitter and tap your profile icon or picture.

Tap Settings & Privacy.

Tap Account.

Tap Username.

Tap Continue to confirm that you want to change your username.

Type in your new username and then tap Done. You’ve set your new Twitter handle.

Twitter will alert you to unavailable usernames and offer suggestions.

What Is a Twitter Handle?

Your Twitter handle is the username associated with your account; it always starts with the @ symbol. Your username is also visible by looking at the URL of your Twitter account’s public profile.

Your Twitter handle or username is different from your Twitter display name, which is a name you add when you edit your Twitter profile. Your display name can be the same as many other people, but your username will always be unique to your account.

There are two ways people can identify you on Twitter — using your handle (or user name), which starts with the iconic «@» symbol, and your display name.

Your display name appears at the top of your profile and is generally your real name or the «plain English» name you want people to associate with your Twitter account.

You can change your display name at any time, and your followers will automatically see the new name.

How to change your Twitter name in a web browser

1. Navigate to Twitter in a web browser.

2. Click your profile picture on the left side of the screen.

3. On your profile page, click «Edit profile.»

4. In the Edit profile window, type a new name in the Name field. This can be up to 50 characters long, and there’s no requirement for it to be unique.

5. In the Edit profile window, tap your name and change it to whatever you like. The new name can be up to 50 characters long, and there’s no requirement for it to be unique.

6. When you’re done, tap «Save.»

Your display name, on the other hand, appears above your username on your profile page and is likely the name that most users will recognize you by.

If you think it’s time for a name change — whether to add a level of professionalism to your online persona or you’re just tired of the old name — here is our quick-hit guide on how to change your Twitter name. Unlike creating a new account, changing your username or display name leaves your existing followers, direct messages, and replies intact. Here’s how:

How to change your Twitter username

Step 1: Log in to your Twitter account

Log in to Twitter as you normally would with your current username (or email) and password. Note: This can also be done using the Twitter app on your phone or tablet.

Step 2: Access the Account Settings

Next, click More > Settings and privacy on the website or select Settings and privacy after tapping on your profile icon in the app. Go to Account. The Account tab should open by default on the website, but you’ll need to click on the Account option in the app.

Step 3: Change your username

You’ll see the Username option. Choose it and type your desired username in the text field. It just needs to be 15 characters or fewer. A message will appear prompting you to choose another username if your first choice is unavailable.

Your new username can only contain alphanumerical characters and must omit both the words “Twitter” and “Admin” unless you’re using an official Twitter account. You can refer to the Twitter Help Center for more details regarding username restrictions. When you’ve finished, click Save to save your new username.

If you have a verified account (designated by the blue check mark next to your name), you’ll lose your badge if you change your username. We recommend that verified users contact and alert Twitter before making any changes.

How to change your Twitter display name

Step 1: Log in to your Twitter account

Like before, log in to Twitter with your username and password. Note: This can also be done in the app.

Step 2: Head to your profile

In order to access your profile, click on your portrait on the left of the screen and then select Profile on the app. On the website, click on the Profile option on the left side of the screen.

Next, select Edit profile. It’s a big, hard-to-miss button on the upper right-hand side of the screen in both the app and the website.

Step 3: Change your Twitter display name

Type in your desired name — it can be 50 characters or fewer now — in the Name text field located directly below your profile picture. Unlike your username, your display name doesn’t have to be unique to your account (John Smiths of the world, rejoice!) and can even include emojis.

When you’re finished, click Save on the right-hand side of the page to save your new display name.

And that’s it! You can change your name on Twitter as many times as you’d like following these instructions. As mentioned before, however, if you have a verified account, changing your username will cause you to lose your verification check mark. What’s The Difference Between Your Username & Your Display Name?

Your username is part of your profile URL and unique to you. It’s used for logging in, direct messages, and replies. Your display name is a personal identifier, like your business name or your real name. Your name displays on your profile page and identifies you, especially if your username is something other than your real name or business name.

Changing your username does not affect your existing followers, direct messages, or replies.

Today we’ll show you how to change your username on the Twitter website and in the smartphone apps. Then we’ll show you how to change your name on the Twitter website.

Change Your Twitter Username on Twitter.com

To change your Twitter username on the website, open your favorite browser and log in to your Twitter account.

Open “Settings And Privacy” On The Twitter Website

Click on your profile photo (or the person icon, if you have no photo) and then click “Settings and privacy“.

Make sure “Account” is selected on the left. Then, change the “Username“, which can be up to 15 characters long.

Your username must be unique. Twitter checks your username as you type it, letting you know if it’s already been taken.

When you enter a unique Username, “Available!” displays above the “Username” box. The URL for your Twitter page displays below the “Username” box.

Save Your Changes On The Twitter Website

Scroll down and click “Save changes“.

Enter your Twitter password on the “Save account changes” dialog box and click “Save changes“.

A message displays saying your settings have been saved. Click the “X” to close he message.

You can also change your Twitter username in the Twitter app on iOS and Android. We show the iOS app here, but the procedure is the same on Android.

Open “Settings And Privacy” in Twitter for iOS

In the Twitter app, tap your photo, or the person icon if you don’t have a photo.

Tap “Settings and privacy” on the slide-out menu.

Change Your Username In Twitter for iOS

Tap “Account” on the “Settings and privacy” screen.

Choose “Username” on the “Account” screen.

Then under “New“, start entering a new username.

Your username must be unique. Twitter checks your username as you type it, letting you know if it’s already been taken.

When you’ve entered a unique username, a green check mark displays to the right of it. Tap “Done“.

Go Back To Your Twitter Home Page In Twitter For iOS

Tap the back arrow on each screen until you return to your Twitter homepage.

Change Your Twitter Display Name

Changing your Twitter name can only be done on Twitter.com in a browser. Log in to your account and click on your profile photo, or the person icon, if you have no photo.

Open & Edit Your Profile On The Twitter Website

Then, click “Profile“.

Next, tap “Edit profile“.

Enter a New Twitter Name On The Twitter Website

Enter a new display name in the box at the top of the left side of the screen. Your name can be up to 20 characters long.

Then, click “Save changes“.

A message displays saying your profile has been saved, and your new name displays on the left.

Great info … and I’ve followed carefully. but for some reason when I change my display name it only saves it for about 7 days before reverting to my username. Any ideas why?
