Travelling

Millions of people all over the world spend their holidays travelling. They travel to see other countries and continents, modern cities and the ruins of ancient towns, they travel to enjoy picturesque places, or just for a change of scene. It is always interesting to discover new things, different ways of life, to meet different people, to try different food, to listen to different musical rhythms.

Those who live in the country like to go to a big city and spend their time visiting museums and art galleries, looking at shop windows and dining at exotic restaurants. City dwellers usually like a quiet holiday by the sea or in the mountains, with nothing to do but walk and bathe and laze in the sun.

Most travellers and holiday-makers take a camera with them and take pictures of everything that interests them — the sights of a city, old churches and castles, views of mountains, lakes, valleys, plains, waterfalls, forests; different kinds of trees, flowers and plants; animals and birds.

Later, perhaps years later, they will be reminded by the photos of the happy time they have had.

People travel by train, by boat and by car.

All means of travel have their advantages and disadvantages. And people choose one according to their plans and destinations.

If we are fond of travelling, we see and learn a lot of things that we can never see or learn at home, though we may read about them in books and newspapers, and see pictures of them on TV. The best way to study geography is to travel, and the best way to get to know and understand the people is to meet them in their own homes.

hundred years ago, most people never traveled further than a few km. They travelled, walked, went by carriage or on horseback. But in the last quarter of the twentieth century, people have travelled a lot. Many people travel 50 or 100 km daily by public transport or private car. Millions of people travel long distances abroad on business trips or for holidays every year. Even a housewife who is going shopping may travel twenty km.

For most people, speed is a very important factor when they are travelling. They want to reach their destination as quickly as possible. There are now planes that can cross the Atlantic in just over three hours.

Other people prefer comfort to speed. They like to relax during the journey and enjoy themselves as much as possible.

For almost everyone, safety is the most important factor. For example, many people never fly because they believe it is dangerous. In fact, it is probably much more dangerous to travel by car or to walk across a street.

Comment on the data in the diagram and give your opinion on the subject of the project.

What topics do teenagers discuss at school in Zetland?

Plans for the future

Write 200−250 words.

Use the following plan:

— make an opening statement on the subject of the project;

— select and report 2−3 facts;

— make 1−2 comparisons where relevant;

— outline a problem that can arise with peers communication and suggest a way of solving it;

— conclude by giving your opinion on the importance of communication for teenagers.

40.1 Many people believe that there are different ways of spending summer holidays. The aim of the project I am currently working on is to find out more about it. As part of my project, I have found and analyzed some data on how teenagers spend their summer holidays in Zetland.

According to the data, the adolescents have quite a wide range of things to do when they have summer holidays. It is clear that the majority of the respondents prefer staying at home, 39% of them have given this answer. Moreover, about a quarter of the teenagers visit their relatives. Going to the seaside and to the mountains is also quite popular among teenage holidaymakers (17% and 14% respectively).

It is worth mentioning that going to a summer camp is at the end of the table. Surprisingly, more teenagers prefer spending their summer time with their families than alone.

One problem that can arise with spending summer holidays is difficulties with transportation system. For instance, it is very uncomfortable to change airplane for train in a certain city, moreover it costs a lot. One solution to this problem is to create special crossing centers where holidaymakers can wait for their flight or train comfortably. Furthermore, multi-tickets and discounts can be provided for the convenience.

In conclusion, I think that the best way of spending summer holiday is a family trip to the mountains. This type of holidays provides families with the opportunities to become closer and enjoy the nature. (249 words)

40.2 Nowadays young people have lots of interests as well as problems they would like to share with their friends. The aim of the project I am currently working on is to find out more about it. As part of my project, I have found and analyzed some data on what topics teenagers discuss during the breaks at school in Zetland.

According to the data, the youth in Zetland have quite a wide range of things to speak about. The vast majority of the respondents discuss popular games and songs as well as school tasks and grades (35% and 24% respectively). Fashion and gadgets as well as relationships with parents and siblings are also quite popular topics for discussion with the teenagers in Zetland, whereas plans for the future appear to be the least popular theme.

It is worth mentioning that gaming and listening to music are three times as important as thoughts about the future for the adolescence. To my mind, younger generation first of all think about entertainment what is why they speak about it more often.

One problem that can arise with peers communication is that teenagers usually discuss their issues during the lessons. It is clear that breaks are too short; what is more, usually there are no places at school where students can relax. One solution to this problem is to make one break longer and create special zone at school in order to the adolescents can relax there and then concentrate on the lesson.

In conclusion, I firmly believe communication with peers is very important for teenagers. I think it can develop their social skills. (270 words)

Business trip

Business trips are just part of doing business. A company tries to choose only its best people to represent it. Trips can happen in or out of the country. And there are as many reasons to go on a business as there are places to go: to sign contracts, to discuss terms of delivery, payment or shipment, to have tests, to consult, to improve one’s professional skills, to provide support. Representatives of the companies involved usually make preliminary arrangements in order to meet. Whether a long-term or short-term trip, the itinerary must be carefully planned by the head of a department or another executive. After the trip, an employee is ordinarily expected to give a full financial accounting of the trip to his boss. Sightseeing, cultural events and just plain relaxing are a regular part of every business trip. And no businessman would dare forget to buy gifts for relatives, friends and colleagues while on a business trip to an interesting, new location. These trips are important because they contribute to the expansion of a company’s business relationships and help that company succeed in the competitive world market.

Business today is international in character, and business people often have to travel. On a business trip people might meet colleagues and business partners for the first time. Often, colleagues from different countries experience cultural difficulties, that is, they are surprised by strange, to them, social conventions in a new place. Different cultures do things differently! Management styles also differ from country to country. It’s often useful when doing business in a foreign land, to get some advice from a special agency which consults on questions of international business. These days business trips are very important because face to face meetings are more valuable to profitable business than any other type of strategy.

Larry: It depends of what is your budget?

Isabell: $ 520 a day. How much is hotel room?

Isabell: Three.

Larry: Where are you working?

Isabell: At the Rockefeller Centre — 5th Avenue and 51st street. Are there any hotel in

that part of town?

Larry: Of course. But Rockefeller Centre is a business Centre. It’s not very interesting

at night. What do you want to do in the evenings?

Isabell: Go to restaurant, go swimming or maybe go to the ballet.

Larry: There are some great restaurants in New York and there is usually a ballet at

Lincoln Centre. Choose hotel in that area.

Isabell: Where is that?

Larry: Mit down. Just off Central Park.

Isabell: That is dangerous, isn’t it?

Larry: Not at all. During the day it’s full of people having lunch, jogging, horseback

riding. It’s a great place.

Isabell: Where can I find a list of hotels? Is there a quide?

Larry: There are several. I will lend you one.

Isabell: What about getting around?

Larry: Don’t use the subway. It’s not very safe or clean. There are lots of yellow cabs.

They are not very expensive.

Isabell: Thank for your help.

Larry: It’s a pleasure.

All means of travel have their advantages and disadvantages. And people choose one according to their plans and destinations. Different people prefer different means of traveling. Some people like to climb the mountains, others like to go by train with all modern accommodations and without peculiar adventures. However which ever tourism a man would like, any change of place and new impressions are useful. They prevent a man from getting old.

Nowadays traveling has become a highly organized business. But there are some difficulties. If you want to see the beauty of the countryside you have to go hiking. It is traveling for pleasure. You don’t think about ticket, don’t hurry up. You’ll be pitching a tent and building an open fire and breathing in the fresh mountain air and enjoying picturesque surroundings. I think you’ll enjoy every moment of this journey if you are not a comfort-lover.

There is no travel so fine as by ship. It is the most exciting experience to feel the deck of the ship under your feet, to match the waves rising and falling, to feel the fresh sea wind blowing in your face.

It is a great saving of time traveling by air. You’ll have speed, comfort and pleasure combined. When you get into the train you feel that holidays have really begun. You can see a lot by traveling in a train. But when the season is in full swing trains are usually crowded. So as they say «Tastes differ».
