Q: How many men are there in this picture?

A: There aren’t any. There is only one woman.

Q: How much fruit is there?

A: There’s a lot of fruit.

Q: How much water is in the glass?

A: It’s almost full. There’s a lot of water in the glass.

Q: How much traffic is there this morning?

A: There’s a lot of traffic. The cars aren’t moving very fast.

Q: How much fishing does he do?

A: He does a lot of fishing on the weekend.

Q: How much beer is there in his glass?

A: There isn’t any. It’s all gone.

Singular or Plural

(Don’t use in plural form)

(Only use an article with these: a or the)

(These plural count nouns use “ many “)

(These use “much“)

It’s important to understand the difference between noncount and count nouns when using many and much. Noncount nouns are often used to describe large categories while count nouns are usually more specific.

Noncount nouns always use a singular verb. Count nouns are singular or plural.

Much and Many are usually used with the negative:

Any + not, never, or without expresses zero:

Much and Many are usually not used in the affirmative:

I am not sure if I should use ‘much’, not ‘many’ in the following case:

A. Have we got any apples?
B. I’m afraid, not. You should buy some.
A. How much apples should I buy?
B. Two kilograms.

So is it right to use ‘much’ in this case?

I agree with Alisterio.

Regardless the kind of measure you’re using in the conversation. apples are countable nouns, thus much is to be used.

There are two theoretical possibilities:
How many apples (countable) should I buy?
How much apple (uncountable) should I buy?

The second sentence seems unusual to me, though it may be natural for those who buy processed apple in bulk.

But if you are asking How many apples should I buy?, the answer, to match the question, should specify the number of apples, not the number of the units of weight. So it seems we should ask How many pounds of apples should I buy?, but I just can’t see people doing that.

Or, let’s say, I want to know the quantity of apples that somebody bought, I can imagine saying How many apples have you bought?, but let’s change the object for a while, can you really imagine saying How many raspberries have you bought? How many redcurrants.

But how much redcurrants? sounds wrong too.

I assume, ‘much’ is used here because the word ‘apples’ does not follow it immediately.

In a perfect (grammatically correct) world, people would probably ask each other «How many kilos of apples should I buy?» if they were expecting to receive the answer «You should buy 2 kilos.»

However, in a real-life setting, I don’t think there would be any danger of a misunderstanding if you asked «How many apples should I buy?» and were told «2 kilos.»

I guess, we can just use such nouns in singular as uncountable with ‘much’:

A: I’d say four, one for each of the three of us, and one spare.

However, in a real-life setting, I don’t think there would be any danger of a misunderstanding if you asked «How many apples should I buy?» and were told «2 kilos.»

That’s exactly what I was just imagining.

I am shopping.
MrsP phones and says «Can you get some apples?»
I respond «How many?»
MrsP, «The recipe says two kilos of apples.»

I don’t think I would ever ask «How much?»

And here is another quote where a countable noun is used before ‘much’:
Discussion on Carrots: how much is too much?

And the answer is given also with a countable noun:
I have read in earlier postings that 1 carrot 4x/day is a good rule for carrots.

So, indeed it seems that in real life people can easily switch from the uncountable meaning of the noun to the countable and vice versa, as Alisterio mentioned.
The only unacceptable variant would be to use countable nouns immediately after ‘much’, as in ‘how much apples’

— Look at the screen and find the odd one out.

— Tell your name and one of the food starting from your name’s first letter

Model : My name is Aizhan. I like apples.

Your home task was to write about food in your fridge.

Tell the class: What is there in your fridge?

My favorite food is ice cream. I can eat it every day. I also love chocolate, cakes and fruit. Apples and bananas are very nice, but I eat very little kiwi fruit because it is not sweet. Vegetable salads are O.K. I eat them with rice or potatoes. I never eat meat because I am a vegetarian, but I like eggs and milk. I usually drink a lot of juice and a lot of water. Orange juice is very tasty. I don’t drink much coffee or tea. Coffee is awful and tea is O.K. in the evening.
