How to View Your Hours Watched on YouTube

YouTube, the most popular video-sharing platform, gets 300 hours of video uploaded every minute. That’s 12 and half days’ worth of content uploaded every single minute! With that amount of stuff to watch, you’re bound to find hours upon hours of videos on topics you’re passionate about.

Considering YouTube isn’t the only thing you have going in your life, it’s good to be aware of just how much time you spend perusing content. Thanks to the feature named “Time watched”, now you’re able to do that.

While available on the YouTube app for Android and iOS smartphones, this feature can’t be accessed over the app’s version on your tablet. Additionally, Time Watched can’t be found on the platform’s web version, either. And, at this point, it’s not certain if it’ll ever be enabled.

Before you proceed, please make sure you have the latest update of the YouTube app on your smartphone, whether you’re using an iOS or Android app.

Check the Time

To see how much time you’ve spent on YouTube videos, follow these three steps:

Here you can see your watch time for today, yesterday, and the past seven days. Another pretty useful statistic is your daily average, which can be an indicator of whether you’ve been spending too much time watching YouTube on a daily basis.

How much watch on your watch. Смотреть фото How much watch on your watch. Смотреть картинку How much watch on your watch. Картинка про How much watch on your watch. Фото How much watch on your watch

Please keep in mind, that if you’re using YouTube Music or YouTube TV, these times won’t be factored in the “Time Watched” feature. Besides this limitation, the watch times are calculated from all other YouTube products you’ve used to access the video content.

Things to Note

In order to allow YouTube to calculate your watch time, you have to be signed in to your account. That way, everything you watch is kept in your Watch History, which is the main database for the Time Watched feature. If you delete a video from your watch history, it won’t count in your watch time.

Also, any views recorded in Chrome’s Incognito mode, or any similar feature in other browsers, won’t count either. That traffic doesn’t get registered to your watch history because of the privacy security such modes provide.

One thing to consider when using this feature, is YouTube’s Autoplay option that automatically plays video after video. If you have it turned on and leave YouTube playing while you’re not watching the videos, all that will be included in your total watch time as well.

Also, Google points out that there’s a known issue existing in this feature. It affects the time watched on your computer, which isn’t reported correctly in Time Watched.

More Options

Besides the statistics mentioned above, this feature also gets a couple of other tools that can help you optimize your watch time.

Remind Me to Take a Break

This option allows you to set a reminder that will appear while watching videos. In order to effectively remind you to take a break. When the time comes, it will automatically pause the video for you.

Of course, it won’t force you to stop watching YouTube, since that wouldn’t be in the platform’s best interest. Because the reminder appears in the form of a notification, it goes away when you dismiss it or simply resume playing the video.

How much watch on your watch. Смотреть фото How much watch on your watch. Смотреть картинку How much watch on your watch. Картинка про How much watch on your watch. Фото How much watch on your watch

This feature uses a timer that counts the time only when watching YouTube on your smartphone. If you pause or close a video, it pauses the timer as well. In turn, the timer resets each time you close the YouTube app, sign out, switch devices, or pause the video for more than 30 minutes. The timer doesn’t work for offline videos, as well as when you’re casting from your smartphone to another device.

Remind Me When It’s Bedtime

This feature lets you select exact times when you want to be reminded to stop watching videos and go to bed. Once you toggle the setting to the “on” position, you’ll be prompted to select a start and end time for the reminder. Once it notifies you, you have the option to snooze the reminder (for 10 minutes) or dismiss it entirely.

How much watch on your watch. Смотреть фото How much watch on your watch. Смотреть картинку How much watch on your watch. Картинка про How much watch on your watch. Фото How much watch on your watch

You can also set the reminder to wait until the video you’re watching has ended before reminding you it’s bedtime. All you have to do is tick the box on Wait until I finish my video to show reminder.

Autoplay Next Video On/Off

When you finish a video, another plays automatically. When choosing which video to play next, YouTube bases these recommendations on your watch history.

If connected to a mobile network, after 30 minutes of inactivity, Autoplay will stop. For Wi-Fi connections, the limit is four hours. Both of these limitations prevent you from either spending too much of your mobile internet or having your computer work for hours on end.

Keep Your Watch Time in Check

Having so much content to view on YouTube, the Time Watched feature is a pretty good addition. It helps you track how much time you actually spend on videos each day. And if you accidentally get carried away with cooking tips or watching how the internal combustion engine works on the inside, you can have the app remind you it’s maybe time to hit that stop button.

Do you find this feature useful? Were you aware of how much time you spend on YouTube each day? Care to share your daily average? If so, please leave a comment in the section below.

What is the difference between «this» and «that» in «How much is this/that watch»?

I am studying English and I would like to know the difference about «this» and «that» at this phrase translating to Portuguese.

In the image, the subject held the watch and said «that», so I was in doubt.

I saw the difference about this and that here Difference between this and that.

In theory this is easy:

This/these is the English proximal deictic demonstrative determiner and pronoun. It represents the nearer (less distant) of two possible distances with respect to the speaker.

That/those is the English distal deictic demonstrative determiner and pronoun. It represents the more distant of two possible distances with respect to the speaker.

In practice, especially in your personal case, it may not be easy at all.

Iberian languages like Portuguese, Spanish, and Catalan provide three grades of locative deictics — not just two like you find in most dialects of present-day English. Where English now has only proximal and distal grades, Iberian languages also have a medial grade. See here for Portuguese.

GradePersonMeaningEnglishPortugueseSpanish
Proximalfirst, like where you would use mysomething here close to methis/theseisto, este/estes, esta/estasesto, este/estos, esta/estas
Medialsecond, like where you would use yoursomething there close to thee/youthat/thoseisso, esse/esses, essa/essaseso, ese/esos, esa/esas
Distalthird, like where you would use his/theirsomething over there (yonder) close to him/them/neither you nor methat/those (yon, yonder)aquilo, aquele/aqueles, aquela/aquelasaquello, aquel/aquellos, aquella/aquellas

So the first problem you encounter when translating is that you need to map three grades in an Iberian language to only two grades in standard English.

But another issue is that some speech communities assign these grades differently, particularly in Brazil where you may be coming from. If so, then your instincts and regular translation directions may not serve you well here.

See also: 1, 2. In particular, the latter mentions that:

No português coloquial brasileiro, «isso» e «isto» são usados como sinônimos, sem que se faça diferença entre eles, mas com grande preferência por «isso». A situação é análoga para essa/esta ou este/esse.

Rather loosely translated, that runs more or less like:

“In colloquial Brazilian Portuguese, «that» and «this» are used as synonyms, without any difference made between them but with strong preference for «that». The situation is analogous for [the gendered inflections of both those two words].”

Meaning that colloquial Brazilian makes isso (that) and isto (this) synonyms! Eeek! This is going to be very confusing for any instincts you could possibly have. Do please read that answer for more about all this.

I like @tchrist’s answer going into the technical details, but I feel like it’s missing a basic level of practical explanation. As a native British English speaker here is my instinct on what the rules are:

If you’re holding the watch or are otherwise in obvious close contact with it, you must use «this»

If you’re far enough removed from the watch that you might want to gesture at it, but still close enough that you could easily touch it without having to walk across the room for instance, you can use «this» or «that» freely. My «easily touch it» criteria isn’t exactly correct, as I think this case would apply even if the watch is behind a glass cabinet, for instance — if you’re close enough that you could touch it were the glass not there, you can still use either word.

If you’re far enough away from the watch that you can’t easily touch it, or you’re using other sentences, rather than just gesturing, to establish the context on which watch you’re talking about, you must use «that». For the latter case I’m thinking something like «I was discussing a watch with you the other day, remember? How much is that watch?». Of course in the latter case you might be tempted to use something like «the» instead of «that», but for reasons I can’t quite explain right now «the» doesn’t sound quite as good to my ear in that context.

YouTube Watch Time: 5 Ways to Reach 4,000 Hours and Monetize Your Channel

JUMP TO SECTION:

Did you know that the amount of Watch Time required for YouTube monetization is 4,000 hours? Many creators spend a year or more trying to reach that milestone, but it’s totally worth it in the end. Reaching this goal means you can apply to the YouTube Partner Program and eventually monetize your content with ads. And what creator doesn’t want to make money from their videos?

But first, what does Watch Time actually mean on YouTube? And how does YouTube calculate Watch Time overall?

Also, only certain types of videos are eligible to collect Watch Time. You’ll want to make sure most of your videos set to public, as this is the main qualifier.

Outside of these requirements, it’s up to you to create videos that attract more views – and by extension, extra Watch Time.

5 Ways to Reach 4,000 Hours of Watch Time

Want to earn more Watch Time as fast as possible? Keep reading to explore our best tips and tricks.

1. Make Evergreen Content

Getting discovered on YouTube can be quite difficult. But you can make it easier by uploading videos that are:

This is what’s called evergreen content. Creators love these videos because they get lots of traffic, and a result, plenty of Watch Time.

Take a look at these stats. They are real-time view counts for some of our top-performing videos on the vidIQ channel. Notice anything in particular? Take a look at the publish date.

How much watch on your watch. Смотреть фото How much watch on your watch. Смотреть картинку How much watch on your watch. Картинка про How much watch on your watch. Фото How much watch on your watch

Most of these videos were published years ago and still bring in thousands of daily views. That amounts to hundreds of hours of Watch Time for our channel.

To make these evergreen videos, we simply:

Some examples of evergreen topics are «how to change a flat tire» or «how to cook perfect brown rice.» Those tasks are challenging enough to warrant video tutorials, and people will watch them every season of the year.

2. Host YouTube Live Streams

When we hosted our first few live streams, 50-100 people showed up. Now we get hundreds of concurrent viewers, and with that boost in viewership comes plenty of additional Watch Time.

Check out the Watch Time we got from this two-hour live stream:

How much watch on your watch. Смотреть фото How much watch on your watch. Смотреть картинку How much watch on your watch. Картинка про How much watch on your watch. Фото How much watch on your watch

Let’s do the math. If 600 people watch a two-hour live stream, for instance, that’s 1,200 hours of Watch Time.

Nine to 12 months into your YouTube journey, give live streaming a chance. You will probably have a couple hundred subscribers to give you a nice chunk of Watch Time per stream.

3. Upload Videos Consistently

Viral videos are a wonderful thing; they give your channel a boost while attracting new viewers to your content.

But you shouldn’t go into the video-making process intending to make a viral video. Few creators pull it off, and it’s easier to just be consistent on YouTube. Stick to your posting schedule so that someday, you’ll have enough videos to gain 4,000 hours across several uploads versus one video.

How much watch on your watch. Смотреть фото How much watch on your watch. Смотреть картинку How much watch on your watch. Картинка про How much watch on your watch. Фото How much watch on your watch

Let me give you an example. When we launched our Spanish language vidIQ channel, it grew slowly. But we knew we were creating good content consistently. And once YouTube had enough data and positive signals from our content, the channel started blowing up. No viral videos – just good, consistent content being shared with the right audience.

In the end, we didn’t just reach 4,000 hours of Watch Time; we crushed it. Now our content is gaining traction, like this video with more than 800,000 views about getting your first 100 subscribers:

4. Go for Quantity over Quality

Increasing your Watch Time on YouTube is a numbers game. If you need 4,000 hours to get monetized, and your videos earn one hour on average, you would need 4,000 videos total.

That’s just an example, though. Your channel can (and probably will) perform better than that. But the point I’m making is that you need a large collection of videos to reach your Watch Time goals.

That means you shouldn’t be overly concerned with:

Find a way to produce content quickly without sacrificing the quality you need to be competitive on YouTube. Then upload your content and start working on the next video. Rinse and repeat.

5. Listen to Your YouTube Audience

The YouTube Studio has a wealth of analytics to explore, but some of the best growth advice will come from your subscribers. After all, they are your customers. Most of them know what they want to see, and they will tell you exactly what those videos are. Check the comment section of your next video to see what I mean. Highly engaged viewers will share video ideas and practically beg you to film those concepts.

Give some of these ideas a chance. If the videos perform well, you will have even more Watch Time under your belt.

How to Track YouTube Watch Time

Want to keep tabs on your Watch Time hours? The YouTube Studio has a dedicated page in the left-hand navigation panel called Monetization. This will show your subscriber and Watch Time progress.

If you want to keep tabs on additional metrics, like views per hour in the last 48 hours, download VidIQ. You’ll get this awesome real-time stats bar for FREE.

After various dinner table banter with friends and family, I’m convinced that no one actually knows what they should set their Apple Watch calorie goals at and we all just kinda guess. Not anymore, I did the research and have the answers on what your Apple Watch move goal should be.

What should my move goal be?

I talked to professional trainers, read accounts from the team at Apple who designed the feature, and surveyed over 250 of you – and I have answers!

It can be confusing to try to figure out what your goal should be for the day, but let’s break it down. Two of the three are auto-populated on the Apple Watch.

Easy enough. But what about when you try to set your “move” calorie goal?

One thing to note is that your “move” goal on your Apple Watch only tracks your active calories burned. That means none of your sedimentary calories count i.e. the freebies you get from living and breathing every day (more on that below).

Other fitness trackers like the Fitbit will give you some resting calories but don’t be fooled by the inflated numbers. This post is specific to what to set your active calorie goal at.

What Is The Apple Watch Calorie Goal, And What Exactly Does It Measure?

We asked professional trainer & Atlanta fitness boutique studio savant, Jeff Toney, what he thinks about how you should set up your watch or fitness tracker for optimal results. Jeff is the co-owner of Fit9 ATL, Stellar Bodies, and Eclipse 1on1 studios. Here’s what he said:

The Apple watch measurement during a workout automatically subtracts calories burned due to exercise. It uses your height, weight, gender, and age to calculate how many calories burned during your workout. Your Apple watch calorie goal should not be a general statement, more of an individual goal such as thinking “What do I want to achieve?”

What are the 3 Move goals on Apple Watch?

You have 3 rings that keeps track of your movement and activities on your Apple Watch. One of those rings represent the Move goal. This one keeps track of the active calories that you burn throughout the day.

All your activities are considered for this goal. From climbing the stairs to cleaning the house, it doesn’t matter what pace you are moving at, as long you move.

The second ring is the Exercise ring and this one only takes into account brisk and fast paced activity. You will need to complete 30 minutes of brisk activities to earn exercise points and remember that your fast paced activity can be broken up throughout the day.

The final ring on your Apple watch is the Stand ring. This one is simple and great for those of us working at a desk every day. It requires that you stand and move a little for a minute once every hour to have the hour count towards your goal. The goal is for 12 hours out of the day.

What is the difference between Move and Exercise on an Apple Watch?

The move goal on the Apple Watch calculates the active calories burned throughout the day. The exercise goal counts the minutes that you’ve exercised (with a goal of 30 minutes per day). In short, it’s active calories burned vs. time spent exercising.

What are active calories on my Apple Watch?

Active calories are those that are burned because you were active. Throughout the day you may burn passive calories – we burn calories by just waking up and breathing everyday – but those won’t count towards your Move goal.

However, anything from pacing in your kitchen while contemplating your next meal to a lazy walk in the yard counts as active calories burned. For a more accurate reading, make sure you turn on your activity every time you are active, even if it’s a short walk with your pup.

How many active calories should I burn a day?

The million dollar question. What should you calorie goal be? Active calories that are tracked by your Move goal is a great way to keep track of how active you are throughout the day. ****This can vary by person, gender, age, and build. I’ll show you how to calculate the right calorie goal for you below.

How much does the Apple Watch calorie goal vary per person?

If you are more muscular, you will burn more calories in a workout. As well as the older we all get, the less the calories burned per workout because when we age our muscle tends to decrease. Thus men tend to burn more than woman.

(Editor’s note: Uh yah, I’ve noticed this. It’s especially apparent when my husband and I do the same ridiculous workout and he burns double the amount of calories I do. #stillbitter)

How much watch on your watch. Смотреть фото How much watch on your watch. Смотреть картинку How much watch on your watch. Картинка про How much watch on your watch. Фото How much watch on your watch

Speaking of, how do calories burn differ for men and women?

Men burn more calories because a male has more muscle and less body fat genetically when compared to a female of the same age.

Remember when we were chatting about those freebie calories? The ones you get from just being alive? Well those are important too.

An individual’s calorie needs can be calculated by determining their Basic Metabolic Rate. A BMR is basically the number of calories you would burn if you stayed in bed all day. As you may have noticed, your BMR decreases as you age and your body’s ability to burn energy will gradually slow down.
