How To Add Characters to Mugen
Mugen, often styled as M.U.G.E.N., is a 2D fighting game engine. It’s unique in that it allows players to add characters and stages, in addition to menu screens and custom selection screens. Mugen also has a loyal and approachable community of users.
Countless user-created characters are available for free download and use, ranging from custom versions of existing characters to completely original creations. If you’re looking for new characters to refresh your roster of fighters, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s get into it.
Add a Character to Mugen
As befitting its an open platform status, Mugen allows all players to add custom-made characters to the roster. You can create or download them from the internet. In either case, you’ll have to modify some game files to make your characters playable. Let’s see how you’ll be able to add a character to Mugen.
Step 1
First, you should either build or download a character that’s compatible with Mugen. For the purposes of this article, we’ll cover the download route as character creation would deserve an article of its own. Also, we’ll assume that you’ve already downloaded and set up Mugen.
There are many places where you can get more characters. Mugen Archive is where a large number of players get theirs. The site’s Download section features several subcategories like Capcom, Video Game Universe, SNK, and others. Mugen Archive also allows you to upload your creations for other players to use. Mugenfreeforall.com is another popular resource.
Select the category and the player that you want from the list and click the Download button. This example uses Young Ryu by Lord S.
Step 2
You can open the character file if you want to preview its contents. If it’s a ZIP file, simply double-click it. But if it’s a RAR file, you can open it via 7-Zip or WinRAR. Next, extract the contents of the file.

Next, head over to the folder where you installed Mugen. Keep in mind that it doesn’t have to be in the Program Files folder, so you may have to look elsewhere. What you’re looking for is the Char folder under Mugen. Paste your new character’s folder into the Char folder.
Step 5
After that, go up a level and find the Data folder. Enter it and search for the Select.def file. Right-click on the file select Open with from the drop-down menu. Pick Notepad from the list of available programs.
Step 6
Search for the Characters section inside the file. That’s where all the available characters are listed. When you find it, add YRyu to the bottom of the list. You can type it in, but it is better to copy and paste the character’s folder name. A mismatch will result in your character not showing up in the game. Save the changes to the file and close it.
Also, if your character’s folder contains several def files, make sure to amend the entry to include the name of the character you’d like to use. Let’s say that you’ve got YRyu.def and YRyuEvil.def in the YRyu folder. If you’d like to use the former, type YRyu/YRyu into the Characters section of the Select.def file. For the latter, use YRyu/YRyuEvil instead.
Another thing to keep in mind is that Select.def contains many comments, which start and end with semicolons. Write your character’s name on a line that doesn’t begin with a semicolon or it’ll be considered a comment.
Step 7
This step is completely optional. If you want to, you can also set the order of the characters shown in Arcade Mode when you launch Mugen. By default, Mugen’s Arcade mode gives you six opponents from the Order 1 class, one from Order 2, and one from Order 3.
For example, if you’d like to assign YRyu to the second order, you’d add “, order=2” next to the name. It should look like this:
NOTE: Mugen allows you to order your characters from 1 to 10. The game would then randomly choose between characters of the same order.

Adding a new character to Mugen might take a few of minutes including minor edits of the configuration files. However, it’s easy once you’ve tried it a couple of times. May the best fighter win!

So, after I read that tutorial that is already on this website I was shocked how short it is. Thus, many people might have been confused about, how you can add your downloaded character in to mugen, or how you can add arena including music. Thus today, I decided to make my own tutorial to explain better, how you can add your downloaded character, arena or music in to mugen.
Q: Where to get character for mugen? :
A: You can download any character from different websites. One of them been Mugen Archive, the other one Mugen Free for All and or Mugen Database. Go to any of those websites, find a character that you wanted to download and download him.
Q: Where do you get a mugen?:
A: You can find mugen engine on many websites. But I recommend to download it only from safe websites, so you can be sure that you don’t get a virus or something like that. And those websites I already listed above! Yes, it is those 3 websites. I downloaded my mugen from Mugen Archive. But, there is 3 different version of mugen: WinMugen – oldest and unstable one. Mugen 1.0 – updated and stable version and Mugen 1.1 – not finished because it’s authors stopped working on it, leaving it in beta version, but it’s working. I recommend using Mugen 1.0 cause many characters were made for that one, but you can try Mugen 1.1 if you want. It is almost the same thing only with few changes here and there. Sure, there is characters for WinMugen too, but you will have a lots of crashes and problems with WinMugen. Trust me on it. I know what I’m talking about.
Q: Where do you get stages or music?
A: Well, here it is self explanatory. You get them on any of 3 websites listed above: Mugen Archive, Mugen Free for All or Mugen Database!
Q: I downloaded everything, and now what?:
A: Now, create a mugen folder in any place on your hard drive that you feel comfortable with and unpack all mugen files from downloaded archive in to that folder. Unpacked? Good! Let’s move on.
Q: How to install character in to mugen?:
A: Well, that could mean that your character, that you downloaded, are not working with your version of mugen. And to make sure that it is the case, go to your character folder and open a def file of your character. For example: chars/Ryu/Ryu.def/ and look for line called mugenversion. If it says WinMugen then it means that it works only with WinMugen. If it says 1.0 then it means that it works with Mugen 1.0, and if it says 1.1 then it means that it works only with Mugen 1.1. Thus, in order to make that character work, you need to download that specific version of mugen that it says.
Q: How to add your downloaded arena in to mugen?:
A: The same way as you added your character, you can add downloaded arena, or should I say stage, cause that is what it called like. Anyway, you download your desired stage, unpack both def and sff files but in to your mugen folder in to a stages folder. Then, open that Select.def file, scroll down until you see where it says “Extra Stages”. Then, below that line you just insert the name of your stage folder and the name of the stage that you just downloaded. For example: stage/Suzaku_Castle.def. And then you save your changes and launch your game. After you get to a select screen in versus or training mode, after you select your character, you will see a Stage Select pop up in the bottom of the screen or in upper side of the screen, it depends on different factors, and then you select your downloaded stage and play.
Q: What if the downloaded stage doesn’t work?:
A: Well, it’s the same thing as with the characters. If it doesn’t work then it means that it is not compatible with your version of mugen. So the best way would be to find and download compatible version that will work with your version of mugen.
Q: How to add a soundtrack or music to the game?:
A: It is very simple but you need to know how to make it to play during the game and how to add it in to the game properly.

I will show you how to add more character slots in the select screen. Note that this may not work on mugen 1.0 version.
So you want to increase the number of characters you can use in Mugen huh?
Well, I will show you how to do just that, but first you need to ensure that the Screenpack you are using has enough space to add more slots.
Don’t worry much if you don’t, I will also show you how to decrease the size of the slots, so you can fit more.
Ok, let’s get started.
I shouldn’t have to tell you, that first of all it would be a good idea for you to backup your system.def on a different folder. Still, just in case, go ahead and make a copy of your system.def.
Ok, on with it then.
Open your data folder, and find the System.def.
Open System.def
(The one you are currently using) and scroll down to find this:
Take a look at rows and columns.

This is taxing however, since it will go off the screen.

Some screen packs reduce the cell size when the character select grid is moved further to the left.
If that´s the case, you may not need any further adjustments, but you may decrease the cell size too much.
If that´s the case try the following:

Ok, that’s the size for your slots, so you have to make it small enough for all the slots to fit on the screen, but not too small that you wont be able to see the character’s icon.
NOTES:
You may want to play around a bit with the amount, size and position of slots, until you get it the way you want.
Some screen-packs will decrease the size of the slots/cells too much if you add too many, you can play around with the size a bit, but sometimes it will not make a difference, even if you increase the size of the cells.
You may want to leave your select.def blank, because you will be starting up mugen a lot of times to see if you are happy with the select layout, and Mugen opens a lot quicker if there are no characters to load.
We’re almost done, I promise!
Last but not least, have the following option like this while you are editing, you can later switch it back to 0 if you wish:

That’s all I can do for you. the rest is up to you.
It takes quite a few attempts to get this right, but this is the easiest, quickest way to do it.

MUGEN is also known as M.U.G.A.N, Mugen, and M.U.G.E.N. It is designed by Elecbyte freeware 2D fighting game engine. The content is created by the community, and thousands of fighters, both from the original and popular fiction, are created. It is written in C and originally used in the Allegro library. The latest versions of the fighting game engine now use the SDL library. Mugen is a 2d fighting game engine.
10 Easy Steps To add Mugen characters
This Fighting game engine uses a possessory-compiled bytecode for graphics and audio for your computer. It has quite very strong support for adding stages, characters, custom character selection, and menu screens. There are many cool characters available on the internet that people have created, ranging from entertainment to completely original creations for popular characters. In your Mugen game search engine, Adding downloaded characters requires editing configuration files. If you’re looking for how to add Mugen characters, you’ll come to the right place. Let’s get into it.
How to add Mugen characters
As per the status of an open platform, Mugen allows every player to add cool custom characters to the roster. You can download and create with the help of the Internet. In any case, you will have to modify the files of the games to make those characters playable. Let’s see how you can add Mugen character.
Step 1: You should download the Mugen character files for the character which you want to add in Mugen. There are many cool characters available online that you can add to the MUGEN game engine. Character packs come in Zip or RAR format. You can easily download the characters from different fan sites, including:
Step 2: Open the downloaded file. If it is a zip file, you need to double-click on it to see its contents. If it is a RAR file, you will need a program such as 7-Zip or WinRAR to open the file.
Step 3: Extract files. Extract the RAR or ZIP file so that you can enter the folder. Click on the Extract button that is showing on the screen when you open the file, or you can right-click and select “Extract File”.
Step 4: Check your files. The most important thing when checking your new character files is the DEF file of the character. This filename must have the same as the folder that contains it. For example, if the folder name is “LINK_3D”, then the DEF file name should be “LINK_3D.def”.
Step 5: Open your MUGEN installation directory. MUGEN can be installed anywhere, so open the folder you extracted your MUGEN files after downloading. If you can’t remember where it is, do a search on your computer for “Mugen”.
Step 6: Copy the new character’s folder to the char folder. You will find four folders inside your Mugen folder. Drag the newly removed character folder to this folder.
Step 8: Open the “select.def” file in notepad. Right-click on the file and choose “Open with”. Choose Notepad from the list of programs. Find the [characters] section. This is a list of all the character files that have been added to your game.
Step 9: Type the folder name for your new character. The name you type here corresponds to the folder you added for your four folders, which must match the character’s DEF file name. For example, if your new character’s folder name is LINK_3D, type LINK_3D in the [Characters] section.
Step 10: Set character order for arcade mode. You can easily set the “order” of your character, which determines where the character will appear in arcade mode. For example, by default Arcade Mode pits you against six Order 1 opponents, an Order 2 opponent, and an Order 3 opponent. You can set the character as an order from 1 to 10. The game will randomly draw all characters from the same sequence when determining a match-up.
Note: Mugen allows you to order your every character from 1 to 10. The game will then randomly choose between characters of the same order.
