I’m done here. Zero connections. Won’t miss it.

I’m making this thread because the current thread that this forum links to regarding hanging, is pretty lacking of actual information. If it has any, it’s buried beneath questions and confusion. There should be a thread here, where you read the main body post, and you are ready to go. I’m going to try and make that thousand page long thread into one post, you can read right now, and not have to sift through thousands of comments to find an answer.

Let’s approach this the right way. Hanging is a very common method, yet it also seems to be the most debated when it comes to logistics. why? The variables.

How to tie a proper noose:

Regardless of the material used to form the noose, suspension hanging will kill the person in three ways: compression of the carotid arteries, the jugular veins, or the airway.[9][27]About 11 lb (5 kg) of pressure is required to compress the carotid artery; 4.4 lb (2 kg) for the jugular veins;[9] and at least 15 kg (33 lb) for the airway.[15] The amount of time it takes to lose consciousness and die is difficult to predict accurately and depends on several factors. Some believe unconsciousness occurs in five seconds, though Alan Gunn writes that it generally takes longer. It took a man who filmed his hanging 13 seconds to become unconscious, 1 minute and 38 seconds to lose muscle tone, and 4 minutes and 10 seconds for muscle movement to cease.[28][29] Full suspension is not required; most hanging suicides are done by partial suspension, according to Wyatt et al.[30] Geo Stone, author of Suicide and Attempted Suicide: Methods and Consequences, suggests that death by obstruction of the airway is more painful than by the other ways.[26]

The aim of drop hanging, which is also frequently used in executions, is to break the neck. Participants fall vertically with a rope attached to their neck, which when taut applies a force sufficient to break the spinal cord, causing death.[26][31] The length of the drop, usually between 1.56 and 2.75 metres long, is calculated such that it is long enough to allow a less painful death, but short enough to avoid a decapitation.[32] This form of suicide is much rarer than suspension hanging[15] and is likely to be less painful.[33]

When I comes down to it, there are many ways you can choke yourself to death. If you cannot find peace in any of the information listed above, or any choking method already detailed here (like the night night method) then this method is simply not for you. It should be known already this is not a quick and painless death. You will experience agony, if only for a few seconds. If you think you can handle under 1 min of pain, hanging might be the best option for you. It’s tried and tested true. It’s all about how bad you want it.

There is a video I linked on how to tie a noose. If you jump off a solid object with that around your neck, you will be out in under 1 min and die if undisturbed. All these questions about rope quality and structural integrity of where you choose to tie to. don’t kid yourself. it’s up to you to find that out. If you are so desperate to find out the pounds per square inch a hotel closet bar can hold. I doubt your seriousness. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve failed attempts too. but I can also be real about our situation. killing yourself is not hard. there are 1000000 ways to die. at the end of the day, it’s how about how bad you want it.

Robin Williams probably didn’t spend months of research on belt type statistics. He wanted to die, wrapped a belt around his neck, and did it. If you are not ready to face some uncomfortableness before your death, this method is not for you, plain and simple.

I don’t want a painful death. I think hanging is the fools way out if I’m honest, because there are so many other less painful methods. but in the same breath, once you commit, that’s it. There is no failing when you have a noose around your neck with a solid object.

Don’t ask people about PSI. Don’t ask people what rope to buy. Don’t ask people what tree to tie too. These are all decisions you should be making yourself. The only thing you need to learn, is how to tie the rope, and what to tie it to. Once you know this, the ball is in YOUR court.

Edit: if you want this thread to gain traction, leave a comment and emoji. If you don’t, this will get buried and the other thread will take back over, just saying.

Slowly losing my mind and very ill, help me..

How do people hang themselves with a belt? I stick the tail end in the doorframe and close the door, but if I put any amount of pressure on it, it slowly slides out. It’s a normal leather belt, does a thicker one need to be used?

Also, how do people use a doorknob to hang themselves? I’ve never been able to understand this or picture it. Are doorknobs strong enough to reliably hold someone laying down?

And how do people hang themselves from a doorknob with a belt? That seems virtually impossible to me. How do you even get the tail end of a belt into a knot?

Am I just really stupid or something? I understand how standard partial suspension works, but anything involving doors, doorknobs or belts completely loses me.

With partial, what kind of knot should be used to tie the rope to the fixture?

Sorry for all the questions!

ShadowOfTheDay

Hungry Ghost

I am a new member to this forum (though I have been suicidal for many years), and i wanted to share some general impressions and realizations gleaned over the course of my life with respect to the method of hanging:

1) This is one method which is not advisable for everyone; for some people, hanging is either psychologically or anatomically untenable (e.g. for some unfortunate souls, the carotid arteries are too embedded in adipose, musculoskeletal or integumentary tissue to lend themselves to collapse via manual compression).

2) Hanging may be a relatively humane way to die, but it is rarely pain-free.

3) alcohol may reduce inhibitions (specifically the survival instincts), but it also increases the blood pressure, which may increase blood perfusion to the brain, thus postponing unconsciousness.

4) lying supine( on your back) might be comfortable, but it also increases perfusion of the brain. The more upright you can be, the more likely you are to lose consciousness.

5) Commitment is paramount! Once you have decided to ctb you must follow through to the end. This is NOT an attempt to recruit those who are «on the fence.» If you are still contemplating suicide, then you are not ready. Might in fact be hope for you☺.

6) Do NOT slowly ease your way into the «noose.» If you do, you will first occlude the jugular (and accessory) veins, which will cause emense pressure and discomfort whether or not you are then able to occlude the carotid arteries. Again, if (and only if) you are sure that you want to die at this time, you should lean inward quickly with as much pressure as you can bear.

7) hyperventalation is your friend ☺ The pathophysiology of this is quite complex, but basically, you should try to inhale and exhale rapidly, then hold your breath on the exhale.

8) Relax. People die all the time. You are one of the privileged, gifted with the ability to choose the place, time and manor of your passing.

Guide to partially suspended hanging:

Warning: Don’t try this method unless you’re totally sure that:
a) you want to kill yourself
b) that you won’t be found for at least 30 minutes after you attempt.

This method is very lethal and quick (quick from your perspective
anyway, as you black out within seconds), but if you’re found in time
and ‘saved’ you can end up with serious brain damage and/or be left a
vegetable.

Why partial suspension?
Because full suspension seems to me to be unnecessary and creates
difficulties. First of all you need to find a place which would hold
your entire weight, which isn’t easy, and also you need a stronger
ligature, which isn’t always easy to find either. There’s nothing
wrong with full suspension, but it may not be a viable method for
everyone, especially if you’re looking to use everyday materials from
around the home.

By partial suspension I mean that you hang yourself around the neck
(specifically the carotid artery), and push downwards while kneeling.
This should create enough downward pressure on the ligature to tighten
it and close the carotid artery and stop the blood flow to your brain.
All you need is 3 kilograms of pressure to do this, which isn’t much
at all.

Also, with full suspension your entire body weight is pressurizing
your neck, and this would probably be more than enough to not only cut
off the blood supply to your brain, but break your neck as well. I’m
not too sure if that’s a good or a bad thing. I do know though, that
statistically people who’ve attempted via hanging have more often been
found kneeling and partially suspended than being fully suspended.

Where is the carotid artery?
Before you start you have to know this. If you place your hand around
the middle of your neck, around your Adam’s apple, with one thumb on
one side and all fingers on the other, you should feel a strong pulse
and heartbeat. If you close your hand now fairly firmly, you’ll
probably make yourself pass out. It might be a good idea to try this
to make sure you’ve got the right spot.

It may also be a good idea to lubricate the ligature with soap. This
would help the noose tighten even quicker, especially if you’re using
a rough ligature such as a rope. Lubricating it in this way will
increase the friction once you push your head down and tighten the
noose, and could make it a little more effective and faster.

What type of knot?
A slipknot. It’s one of the most basic knots around, and you make it
with one end of your ligature. The other end should go around your
hanging place.

Many people have the misguided idea that a hangman’s knot should be
used, but they’re wrong. A hangman’s knot is for a completely
different purpose, and won’t work for this method.

Where should I hang?
You should hang from a support which will hold part of your weight.

You should test this by tying the loose end of your ligature around
the support several times, sticking your hand (NOT your head) in the
noose and pushing down with it. If the noose holds, you’re fine. If
not, then you’ll have to find another spot.

A great and easy place to hang is from the thick horizontal metal bar
which you find in wardrobes in most homes.

When should I do it?
When no one else will be in the same area, for at least 30 minutes.
You lose consciousness within seconds but your body doesn’t completely
die for around 15-20 minutes. The extra 10-15 minutes is for
preparation time and just in case.

When you’re completely ready, kneel down, stick your head in the
noose, position it around the carotid artery and push downwards with
your head.

Further illustrations and evidence of high success rate for this method:

Partial-Elf

Eternal Oblivion

After reading into partial and experimenting over the past few days, I figured it out tonight and can repeat it (maybe a little too well). I made this account so that I can share my knowledge with you. The difference for me was in how completely (and to a lesser extent quickly) I put my weight onto the noose. I had previously been pussyfooting around and easing my weight in, but the difference came when I relaxed all my weight into the noose all at once–it didn’t hurt as much as I expected. I’ll go into a little more detail for those who would like it:

Equipment
It’s not as confidence inspiring as a doorway pull-up bar, which I consider the gold standard, but I have had no issue using one of these door hanging metal coatracks as an anchor point. I weigh less than 165 lbs in case you’re wondering. I’ve also been using a metal caribeaner and rope rated for what I believe was 180 lbs from Walmart. The caribeaner is in place of the knot on the noose end which makes things much simpler. I also pad the front of my neck with a face towel before applying the noose.

Experience
Since changing the key variable (complete, rather than tentative, release of weight onto noose), I have had three consecutive successful trials. My subjective experience was similar in all of them:
I started the timer on my phone and then released my weight with feet still in contact with the ground. In under eight seconds, I experienced the following: dimness of vision, feeling of weightlessness, mild tingling. Upon releasing myself, I had a hard time standing. I didn’t experience anything unpleasant besides the minor discomfort of the weight of the noose on my neck, which was quickly (2-3 seconds) overshadowed by the darkness, tinglyness, and weightlessness.

Caution
My last trial is worth giving special note to. I followed the same procedure as the others but stayed just a second too long and nearly went over the edge. Of all my trials so far, this one quickly led to the dimmest vision, lightest and numbest body, foggiest thoughts, and greatest difficulty in standing. I remember looking at the timer and seeing 8 seconds when I staggered to my feet and struggled to remove the noose (although it’s just a simple snap style caribeaner). Consciousness was very loose indeed.

A word of caution to those of you experimenting with partial: make sure you’re ready to go and that you will not be found, even if you’re just doing tests, as you may “succeed unexpectedly.” There were others in my house who might’ve heard me and interrupted once the spasms started, and god knows what kind of situation I’d be in then.

Reflection
This trial gave me some things to consider. The primary emotion I felt after nearly losing my grip on the third trial was panic that my cohabitators would find me and get me locked away (need to experiment/attempt in a strictly empty house moving forward and also try to ensure that they will not be the ones finding me). The panic was exacerbated by the fact that I might’ve shared just a little too much with my doctor today–nothing to put my independence in jeopardy, but maybe enough to raise an eyebrow or two.

The secondary emotion I felt was the enhanced gravity and seriousness of the situation now that I really know what I’m doing and can ctb fairly reliably (knock on wood). I had some ambivalence, which was unexpected and needs to be examined before I fully let go.

Finally, I felt a mixture of satisfaction and relief knowing that I’d finally found a winning formula and that the choice is truly in my hands now. Partial is very peaceful and effective once you’ve dialed it in and is certainly my method of choice should I choose to proceed.

Happy to field any questions you may have.

Standing up for yourself can be really challenging if you’re used to letting others have their way or you’re a people pleaser. When you trim yourself down to suit everyone else, it can all be too easy to whittle yourself away; learning to stand up for yourself is a way of ensuring other people respect you and don’t try to push you around or manipulate you. Unlearning the old habits of self-effacement and gaining the confidence to stand up for yourself won’t happen overnight, but the journey to improvement starts with the first step.

Does somebody have information on the location of the knot? In the moment Im not capabale of testing correctly, because I can barely leave my bed, even taking a shirt on is too much for me sometimes atm. So causing unconsciousness through a rope around the neck is a little too much aswell.
But from what I see, no matter if the knot is in front of the face or behind the back, pressure on my blood vessels is applied. Does it really matter?

1) I would ask myself if the anchor point is really stable enough since it will have to hold your weight about 20 minutes. Even if it holds you in a quick test, doesn’t mean it lasts through the entire period.
2) Are you sure this place is really private enough? Looks quite public to me, like the cellar of a big house. You are found, you are not dead.
3) Maybe you simply test the height. Unfold your rope, make a proper knot (i take the slipknot, it gets recommended a lot and seems to work very good in my tests), attach the rope securely to the anchor point and see if everything works out the way you imagine it. I think there is actually almost no height requires, you can probably attach your noose very close to the anchor point. Your body will still pull you down with its weight.

Hey.
2.) Thanks for replying to this, it really helps. Hmmm this is at the back of the house, I plan to do it 11PM or 12AM, they will find me by 6AM when they go at the back of the house. Pretty much public.
3.) I am sure this will hold my weight since it’s cemented and a window grid that’s a tight iron bar. One thing I’m worried about is that it doesn’t swing the rope or it’s not the same as where there is only a metallic bar that can swing the rope like a pendelum or one single beam where you can tie the rope to.

Maybe I’ll be testing it out.
@AnotherTragicName you can’t leave your bed??

How much noise will i make when haging from full suspension? I’ve rented a cheap house, but i’m concerned that the neighbours or someone walking past the streets could hear something.

When you’re completely ready, kneel down, stick your head in the
noose, position it around the carotid artery and push downwards with
your head.
