How to join dark brotherhood
How do I join the Dark Brotherhood?
In Oblivion, you simply have to kill 2 or three people and then are contacted by the Dark Brotherhood in your sleep. In Skyrim, I have killed lots of people, but I can’t seem to find the Dark Brotherhood and I haven’t been contacted. Is there a different way you join in Skyrim?

While on your travels in Skyrim, go to any inn and ask for the latest gossip. The innkeeper will tell you that there is a child trying to perform the Black Sacrement in Windhelm. If you happen to be in Riften, speak to a man named Maul. He will be standing against a post as soon as you enter the city. After sharing some tough words with you, he gives you information on both the Thieves Guild, and the Dark Brotherhood; for a price, of course. You could alternatively talk to Idesa Sadri inside Candalhearth Hall in Windhelm and ask about a cursed child performing the Black Sacrement. Idesa can also be overheard talking to Grimvar Cruel-Sea about the child, Aventus Aretino, outside the Aretino Residence. Aventus Aretino can be found inside the Aretino Residence, which has a novice-level lock. The child will offer you the Innocence Lost quest, which will lead to the quest With Friends Like These.
After Innocence Lost has been completed, a courier will appear and give you a note with the imprint of a black hand and the words «We Know» written beneath it. If you do not receive the note, wait for a couple of days. Once you receive the note, sleep in any bed. Thereafter, you are abducted by the Dark Brotherhood, taken to an Abandoned Shack, and asked to kill one of three people in the room (With Friends Like These. ). Killing one or all of the potential victims will earn you an invitation to join the Dark Brotherhood. You may also take the opportunity to destroy the organization by attacking the Dark Brotherhood representative, Astrid. This will initiate the quest Destroy the Dark Brotherhood!.
Skyrim: How to Join the Dark Brotherhood
The Dark Brotherhood is a secret society that dates all the way back to the first Elder Scrolls game, Arena, and Skyrim players can join it if they so choose. It’s not the most difficult faction to join, but if you want to be an assassin, you need to know how to do so.
This Skyrim guide will tell you everything you need to know if you’ve ever wanted to know how to join the Dark Brotherhood and become a master assassin.
How to Join the Dark Brotherhood in Skyrim
Before you can join this faction, you will need to find Aventus Aretino, a Nord child in Windhelm performing the Black Sacrament, a ritual used to contact the Dark Brotherhood.
During your travels, rumors of Aretino will circulate around Skyrim. You may hear it from a number of different NPCs, including guards and innkeepers.
If you’re having trouble finding an NPC who will tell you about him, you can speak with Maul in Riften next to the city entrance; if he’s not there, it’s possible he’s in the Mistveil Keep. You will need to pay him to get information regarding the Dark Brotherhood. Similarly, the children in the Honorhall Orphanage in Riften will often talk about Aretino.
When you eventually catch word of his antics, the miscellaneous objective «Talk to Aventus Aretino» will automatically begin.
You can now go to Windhelm to speak with Aretino in his home. You will find him kneeling over a skeleton performing a ritual to contact the Dark Brotherhood. He will assume his ritual was a success and that you are an assassin who was sent to him.
When you speak with him, you will be given the «Innocence Lost» quest, one of Skyrim’s darkest quests.
To complete this quest and join the Dark Brotherhood, you must kill Grelod the Kind, the old woman who operates the Honorhall Orphanage, who Aretino claims to be a horrible person. Upon killing her, the orphans will cheer. Return to Aretino and let him know that the deed is done to complete the quest.
With that finished, you will now need to wait 24 hours before you can be contacted by the Dark Brotherhood. After that time, sleep in a bed, and when you awake, you will find that you have been abducted by the Brotherhood and taken to a strange shack.
In this shack, there will be a Dark Brotherhood assassin named Astrid and three hostages. To join the Brotherhood, simply kill one of the hostages, and you will be immediately invited into the feared secret society. Accept the invitation, and you are in.
If you attack and kill Astrid, you’ll start a questline to destroy the Dark Brotherhood, so choose wisely!
And that’s how you join the Dark Brotherhood in Skyrim. Now you have access to one of the most exciting questlines in the game, as well as new armor and weapons. Well, unless you choose to destroy the Dark Brotherhood, that is. Either way, if you’re looking for more tips and tricks for Skyrim, consider checking out our guides page!

Dark Brotherhood (Skyrim)
«What is the music of life?»
«Silence, my brother.«
The Dark Brotherhood is an organization of highly trained assassins who carry out assassination contracts. The Dark Brotherhood is called upon by those who wish to utilize their deadly services through a ritual called «The Black Sacrament,» although to join the organization, one must be contacted directly. They were once the most feared organization in all of Tamriel, but have lost their reputation over time due to the destruction of multiple sanctuaries across Tamriel. At one point, they were governed by The Five Tenets, which set the ground rules for the Brotherhood, but those tenets have long since been abandoned.
The Dark Brotherhood has been operating in Tamriel for many Eras, at one time having many clandestine sanctuaries across the Empire. They revere Sithis, the avatar of entropy and chaos, as well as the Night Mother, who is their spiritual leader.

History
The Dark Brotherhood has been struggling for survival ever since the end of the Third Era. Due to the events of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, the Dark Brotherhood in Cyrodiil was crippled. They managed to survive until the Great War, when, one after another, each Brotherhood Sanctuary was destroyed. By the end of the war, the Brotherhood was near total destruction once again. Cicero, one of two remaining Dark Brotherhood assassins outside of Skyrim (the other believed to be a deserter), took the Night Mother’s corpse from Bravil to the last remaining Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary. In The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the Dark Brotherhood has no listener to hear the Night Mother and thus hears about The Black Sacrament through rumors. This type of life for the Brotherhood continues until the Dragonborn joins them.
Dark Brotherhood Requirements
An assassin, poised to strike.
Any man or woman may join the Dark Brotherhood. Initiates must display the ability to kill mercilessly, without regret or sorrow. As a result, their ranks include vampires, werewolves, bandits, and mages.
Using stealth, however, is not the only way to assassinate a target without being noticed or given a bounty. One can use both Destruction and Illusion magic to take down targets. To do this, one has to have the Quiet Casting perk, and at least a Firebolt/Lightning Bolt/Ice Spike spell in the Destruction school. With these requirements, while in stealth mode, one can fire a spell at a target to kill them, without receiving a bounty. An alternative way for mages to use magic to kill a target, is, while in stealth mode, cast a Fury spell at one’s target in a public place; this way, characters in-game will kill the target and thus no bounty will be received. Also, if the Dragonborn is a werewolf, they can transform, putting themselves into an unidentifiable state; this way, they can kill their target without getting a bounty, but they must transform without being noticed.
Attracting the Dark Brotherhood’s attention
The Dragonborn can go to any inn and ask for the latest gossip from the innkeeper. The innkeeper may tell the Dragonborn that Aventus Aretino is trying to perform the Black Sacrament in Windhelm.
The children in the Honorhall Orphanage in Riften will also speak about Aventus’ attempts to summon the Dark Brotherhood, which will give the Dragonborn a miscellaneous objective as well. Upon speaking to the children there, they will tell the Dragonborn that Aventus Aretino escaped and has plans to kill their headmistress, Grelod the Kind, by summoning the Dark Brotherhood.
Speaking with Aventus Aretino in his parent’s home in Windhelm initiates the quest «Innocence Lost» and starts the Dark Brotherhood questline. After accepting Aretino’s proposal, the Dragonborn is directed to visit Honorhall Orphanage. After killing Grelod, the children will cheer and celebrate her death. No bounty is issued for her death.
The Five Tenets are no longer followed by the Brotherhood.
Joining or destroying the Brotherhood
Twenty-four hours after Innocence Lost has been completed, a courier will appear to the Dragonborn in any city, with a note saying, «We know.» A black hand-print is above the words. After receiving the note, sleeping in any bed for any amount of time will begin the next phase of the quest (the acquisition of this note is optional). While sleeping, the Dragonborn is abducted by a Dark Brotherhood assassin and wakes up in an Abandoned Shack. This is where the decision to join or destroy the Dark Brotherhood must be made.

After Astrid betrays the brotherhood to Commander Maro and the Penitus Oculatus during the first assassination attempt against Emperor Titus Mede II, the Penitus Oculatus ravage the Falkreath Sanctuary, killing all but Nazir and Babette. During the attack, the Night Mother hides her Listener within her coffin, to protect them from the invaders and the fires they ignited in the sanctuary. The Listener awakens in the Sanctuary, safe and sound. The Listener then is told by the Night Mother that Astrid is still alive in the temple and must be located. She is burnt badly. She admits to betraying the Brotherhood and hands the Listener the Blade of Woe with which to kill her.
Refurnishing the sanctuary
After every possible upgrade has been purchased for the Sanctuary, Dark Brotherhood Initiates will be in the Sanctuary. They are available as followers.
How to Join the Dark Brotherhood in Skyrim
The dark brotherhood is a rumored assassin’s group in Skyrim, who can be a bit tough to find and join. Because they work in the shadows and deal with assassinations, that’s kind of the whole point of them is to be hard to find. So how do you get started on the path to becoming an assassin? Well, basically by just going out and being one without their permission. Turns out they don’t like competition claiming to be them, and they’ll find you pretty quick when you do it.
Step 1)Get a job as a Dark Brotherhood assassin.
Head to Windhelm and find Aventus Aretino inside of his former home here. He is performing the dark sacrament that is supposed to be used to call the Dark Brotherhood to hire them for a job. Speak to him and he will assume you are from them and offer you the job. Accept and you’ll be given a quest to go kill Grelod the Kind in Riften.
Step 2)Kill Grelod the Kind.
This woman is seriously in the absolute wrong line of work. She’s the person who runs the orphanage in Riften, and she hates children with a passion. No matter what kind of a character you play, killing her shouldn’t be any sort of a problem, even morally. You don’t even have to be stealthy to do this at all, she’s so well liked that no one even reports that you are the one who killed her, and the children of the orphanage all throw a little party if you go stab her in the face in front of them. Don’t worry about stealth at all, you are looking to get noticed, right?
Step 3)Wait for a while in any major city.
Wait a day or two, and then hang out in any major city. A courier will find you with a very ominous letter after enough time has passed. once you get this note, go ahead and find a bed to sleep in and you’ll be kidnapped and made an official member of the Dark Brotherhood.
Once you’ve been made a member, you can do additional jobs for them, and rise in the ranks the more work you do. There’s some pretty good rewards that come with membership as well, including a pretty cool horse that can’t die.
