After a year of working from our kitchen tables and sofas during the Coronavirus pandemic, we’ve seen a lot of talk (and countless memes) about the new lack of requirement to put on a bra.

Just this week The Crown actor Gillian Anderson revealed she’d stopped wearing a bra, resulting in widespread praise from her fans on Twitter.

‘I can’t wear a bra. I can’t,’ she told her 1.8 million Instagram followers during an Instagram Live. ‘I’m sorry, there’s no. I don’t care if I reach my belly button. my breasts reach my belly button. I’m not wearing a bra anymore. It’s just too f***ing uncomfortable.’

As we continue to work from home, we still think it’s an impressive feat if you manage to change out of our pyjamas in the morning, let alone pop on a boulder-holder before a meeting.

Apart from during the occasional video conference call and Zoom session with our friends, many of us have even been tempted to whip off our tops and #freethenipple entirely, especially as our backs are hurting from being hunched over our laptops, Monday to Friday. New research carried out by Censuswide for Tu found that since lockdown began, nearly 46% of women ditched their bras at least once a week in the name of comfort and almost two in five women spend up to four hours a day in discomfort due to their underwear.

We don’t know about you, but thinking about whether or not to wear lacy underwear right now is pretty low on the list. And, as the weather gets hotter this summer, we really can’t be bothered with boob sweat and chaffing.

That’s why we consulted a range of experts to find out the pros and cons of wearing a bra, and to ask whether we really should be giving our breasts some respite by going braless.

Ask yourself: When was the last time you went for a bra fitting? Well, you might want to consider booking an appointment when lockdown ends, as studies estimate that more than 80% of women are wearing the wrong bra size. To make matters worse, 70% of us are wearing bras that are too small, while 10 per cent are wearing bras that are too big.

In addition, according to The Institute of Osteopathy there’s evidence that larger breast/cup sizes can be a contributing factor to changes in your posture, which in turn may lead to musculoskeletal pain.

As a result, we spoke to Robin Lansman, osteopath and media spokesperson for the Institute of Osteopathy to find out whether bras help or hinder our boobs:

Is it a myth than poorly fitting bras cause back pain?

It depends on which type of bra you wear (an everyday bra, a sports bra etc) and a woman’s build. There’s also a myriad of factors that can contribute to a woman’s back pain. For example, some women are less comfortable with their shape so may slump or arch their shoulders, which will have a big effect on how the back muscles affect their posture. When it comes to women’s musculoskeletal pain and breasts, it’s not just as a result of their size and bra.

Should we be wearing sport’s bras all the time instead of pretty bras?

Not necessarily. Sports bras can often provide too much support and prevent the ribcage from functioning properly, therefore weakening back muscles and overstraining the breast ligaments. However, if you do regular exercise it’s important to have some support otherwise your risk damaging the internal structure of the breast. When you don’t wear a bra during a workout, your back, neck muscles, and trapezius (a major muscle in the back) are also going to have to work a lot harder to balance out your weight.

More than 80 per cent of women are wearing the wrong bra size

Like changing swimming strokes, variety is good when it comes to wearing a bra. You should monitor how you’re feeling and what activities you’re doing that may require structural support more so than others. The key to wearing or not wearing a bra comes down to encouraging the body to learn how to work, not just bracing it tightly for a quick fix solution to back pain and postural problems.

Are bras purely cosmetic?

Not at all. The bra’s main function is to support the weight and structure of the breast. However, women often have a lot of tension and stiffness localised where the bra strap is placed. Tight bras can also severely affect the ribcage, as well as cause back and neck pain.

Sports bras can often provide too much support and prevent the ribcage from functioning properly

In conjunction with regular bra fittings, women who suffer from back pain should consult an osteopath on how they move, the effects of their working and home environment, and get a list of exercises to help their mobility. Bras help muscles and the spine get into a better position, but it’s not a one-stop solution.

If you go braless, what should you do to strengthen your core, back and shoulder muscles to prevent pain?

Stretching and activating muscles rather than strengthening is key to creating a strong muscle grouping. Floor-based breathing exercises which don’t demand anything on the posture will help, as well as using resistance bands that activate the muscles without overloading them.

An application of heat to stimulate blood flow to postural muscles should also be considered as well as a change of pillows. Consult an osteopath or GP for more information.

While many things have seemed out of our control during the pandemic, it’s important to take charge of the little things we can in life to ensure we maintain a health body and mindset.

That’s why it’s important to ensure that we give our bodies as much support while working from home as possible, whether that’s practicing certain yoga poses to alleviate lower back pain or wearing a bra to support our breasts.

Ahead of the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, British female athletes have been fitted with specially designed sports bras to help support their boobs and improve performance after 70% said they wanted better help to improve their breast health.

‘Everything we do in elite sport is aimed at trying to give that little tiny improvement,’ Dr Anita Biswas, senior sports physician and co-lead of female athlete health at the English Institute of Sport (EIS), recently told the Guardian.

With this in mind, we spoke to Carole Remy, communication manager from Empreinte, to find out her advice on whether to wear a bra at home.

Should we be wearing a bra while sat for prolonged periods of time at home?

It’s important to take care of your self esteem as much as possible, regardless of whether you’re working from home or not.

Wearing a bra is not only necessary when you are active and in motion. Full breast support provides comfort, above all, but also allows to relieve back pain. Even when you’re doing your recommended 30 minutes of exercise every day, it’s important to remember that when we walk our breast move 3 to 4 cm and even more so when you practice a sporty activity.

Should we go braless for our backs while we WFH?

A breast can weigh more that a kilo when you are a D cup or above. The pressure on the whole body is huge, especially for the back. Remember that breasts are made up of fat, glandular and adipose tissues, and only the skin and the ligaments support them.

If you feel uncomfortable in your bras, most likely the problem lies with the bra itself. Perhaps you are not wearing the right size or the quality of your bra is not good enough to provide all the support and comfort you need.

When you wear a well fitted and textured bra, you should feel lighter, confident and almost forget that you are wearing one. While many women think that bra straps are the most important element of a bra to provide support, it’s actually the back fabric.

If you want to ditch your day-to-day bra and go braless all together, however, I’d advise opting for a sports bra or – ideally – how about trying a bra without under wiring? I suggest opting for a seamless or T-shirt bras which are really comfortable.

Should we get measured for a bra after lockdown?

Lockdown or not, the breast evolves over the days and through life. It is always beneficial to go to a lingerie store to have your measurements taken, and be instructive to take all the tips and tricks from the fitting experts to feel good in your bra.

It’s important to remember that investing in a good bra means choosing a product that lasts over time. A bra is a very intimate product: it blends with the body and therefore follows its shape especially the back.

Wearing a bra or not is a personal choice. For those who don’t feel the need, it’s up to them. On the other hand, if some are looking for support or feel discomfort due to the weight of their breasts then it is advisable to pass into the hands of experts. Being guided by someone can really help you to find the correct shape and the right size.

Gone without a bra during COVID-19 and reluctant to make the switch back? Here’s how bras impact your body

If you’re one of those women who reaches to unclip your bra clasp as soon as you arrive home, chances are the isolation COVID-19 brought with it was welcome relief for you.

In a world where no one can tell if you are wearing pants or pyjamas during your virtual meeting, not wearing a bra has been a relatively risk-free — and comfortable — choice for many.

«Some women have so thoroughly enjoyed not wearing a bra throughout this time working from home that they are telling clinicians that they are internally debating if they will ever go back to wearing one,» a spokeswoman for Osteopathy Australia said.

«Anecdotally, some women coming to the clinic share that it can be incredibly difficult finding a bra that works for them.

«This is a valid point — why should women return to wearing something that’s uncomfortable, expensive no matter the price point, and a bit hit and miss with fabric options, lining, underwiring, padding, straps, presentation and long-lasting wear?»

Indeed, if the thought of digging into the bottom of your underwear drawer to find your bra stash again makes you shudder, now might be the time to join ranks with celebrities like Kendall Jenner, and embrace going bra-free.

In 2015, the supermodel and member of the famous reality TV family said that she «really [doesn’t] see what the big deal is with going braless … I think it’s cool and I really just don’t care.

«It’s sexy, it’s comfortable and I’m cool with my breasts. That’s it!»

But while it may be more comfortable, are there any health implications to consider before you stop wearing bras altogether?

‘No science’ to support bra use and breast cancer

Whether or not you like the look of going braless, not wearing a bra has little impact on breast health.

«A bra is an article of clothing, not a medical device,» Dr Amanda Newman from the Jean Hailes Women’s Health Organisation said.

«One can choose to wear a bra or not wear a bra without worrying about whether it’s going to affect breast health.»

Dr Newman said one of the most common questions people had around bra use, was if it caused cancer.

«There’s no link with breast cancer,» she said.

«Wearing a bra doesn’t prevent or expose you to breast cancer. There’s no science to support that.»

In their myth-busting section, Australia’s Cancer Council website also states that «there is no credible research showing a link between wearing, or not wearing, a bra and developing breast cancer».

So if there is no evidence to link bras and cancer risk, is there any evidence to suggest wearing a bra decreases breast sag?

Again, there is not.

Researchers at the University of Wollongong recently completed a study looking at breast anatomy, which they hope will have far-reaching benefits for fields like cancer treatment, cosmetic surgery, and bra design.

Their findings suggested that the knowledge we have about breasts and what’s known as Cooper’s ligaments — connective tissue in the breast which many believe can stretch and sag if you go without a bra — is far too limited.

«The majority of the information that we hold as gospel about the structural anatomy of the breast was discovered by Sir Astley Cooper in 1840,» dissection technician Katie Gaskin said.

«That’s just not good enough by any scientific standard these days.»

Dr Newman said that the way breasts sat or sagged had more to do with genetics, hormones and weight, than wearing a bra.

«There has been some suggestion that your breasts will become less droopy if you wear a bra, but I don’t think there’s any good evidence for that,» Dr Newman said.

«Breasts are made up mainly of fat and of tissue, there’s not much of anything else.

«Breasts become floppy and saggy as they get older, and there’s a link with hormones. After menopause they become more droopy, during pregnancy they are bigger, during your period they are more tender.»

But it’s not one size fits all.

Before you rid yourself of all your uncomfortable, old bras, there are some caveats to this conversation.

While there may not be any health conditions related to wearing a bra, there could be some musculoskeletal ones, particularly if you wear a larger cup size.

«Women who are wearing a bra size D or above often get back aches, aching shoulders and neck pain, because of the weight of their breasts,» Dr Newman said.

«A good quality bra [should] cater for the size of your breasts and the size of your back.

«If your neck is sore, your upper back, your shoulders, then pay attention to that, and think, ‘Do I need a bra? Does it need replacing?'»

Osteopathy Australia echoed Dr Newman’s advice, and said clinicians «are generally concerned about the strain on the upper back for those large-breasted women who are unsupported».

Is it OK to ditch the bra when you work in an office?

You don’t know frustration until you try and untwist a bra strap through your shirt. It’s part of the reason I decided to try going bra-free, which was easy except for one place.

«For some women, their bust and cup size simply requires them to wear a bra because their breasts are too heavy or large to be unsupported,» they said.

«It may be worthwhile making an appointment with your osteopath to talk about any pain you are experiencing, your posture and how your breasts may impact that, plus how you can best care for them with the clothing you wear.»

The age of your bra is another factor to consider if you are experiencing pain and discomfort.

«As bras get older they do stretch, they lose their support after they’ve been washed and worn,» Dr Newman said.

«Check that your bra is feeling comfortable, check whether the shoulder straps need adjusting.

«[If your bra] is really floppy and looking more like a singlet, do pay attention.»

However, wearing a bra 100 per cent of the time, regardless of your cup size, is not necessary — if you do go without for periods of time, just keep an eye on whether your back pain increases.

So how about bras and exercising?

Again, this question comes down to how large your breasts are, whether you have any musculoskeletal pain, and your level of comfort.

If you do regular exercise, some women find a crop top or a fitted singlet can suffice — but if you require more support, Dr Newman advises seeing a trained fitter.

«You might need to go to a specialist bra shop to get the right size, but a trained fitter can find you something that gives you support,» she said.

While not a physical activity, Osteopathy Australia said wearing a bra while working at a desk was something to keep in mind as well.

«Larger busted women may notice that they get upper back or shoulder pain, especially if they work in a job which require long hours at a desk,» their spokeswomen said.

«The reason for this is that larger breasts can weigh a significant amount, which encourages slouching and rolling in of shoulders. This puts strain upper backs and necks, which over time can cause fatigue in those muscles and sometimes pain.»

Osteopathy Australia suggested being fitted for a bra that distributed weight evenly across the shoulders, ribs and back, with an adequate cup size, and keeping an eye on your posture.

Of course, some women choose to wear a bra simply because it makes them feel more confident — a reason Dr Newman said was «totally valid».

«Many women are more comfortable wearing a bra — it can provide support … and also has aesthetic appeal; they can be pretty or sexy,» she said.

«A bra can give you support, or it can make you feel attractive. It’s not a health issue.

«If you like it for comfort, wear it; if you’re more comfortable without it, go without.»

The most important thing — whether you wear a bra or not — is to pay attention to what is happening with your body.

«Take notice of any symptoms, be aware of what your breasts look like, and if you notice a significance change see your GP,» Dr Newman said.

What to Wear Instead of a Bra (The Ultimate Guide)

Have you been longing for some freedom and wondering what to wear instead of a bra? If so, this guide is for you.

Most women will tell you the time of day they usually look forward to is when they eventually remove their bra. In the confines of our homes, when we finally get to free our breasts from being entrapped by a bra, it definitely becomes the high point of her day!

The freedom and liberation which comes from this simple action cannot be matched.

However, the joy is short lived when you decide to step out of your home without wearing a bra. This is especially the case if you have large breasts because no one likes walking around with sagging breasts. In short, the breasts need to be supported not only for our comfort, but also for shaping purposes.

History of Women’s Undergarment

Women have been wearing bras for a long time. Before we discus about what can be worn instead of a bra, let’s look at how the bra has evolved with time.

Looking at history books, some Indian sculptures show women wearing some kind of half blouse garments that are similar to the modern bra. Also, Minoan art shows women engaging in what seems to be athletics in garments that are similar to modern day bikini.

In other parts of the world, women weren’t strained by any kind of undergarment. They just let their breasts be free (this was the glory of olden days)!

For example, the aboriginals from Australia believe that the woman’s breasts are a thing of pride and beauty. The community believes the sisters should remain unstrained and uncovered. In some tribes, the breasts are bejeweled.

The Advent of Corsets and Girdles

In the early 16th century, the civil society had different ideas when it came to undergarments. This is until the corset was invented.

The corset was an inverted cone shape clothing that was used to push up a woman’s breasts to the level where her bosoms were almost spilling out of a low neckline dress, regardless of its puffs and frills.

How Was Stiffness Achieved?

A casing was stuffed with a long piece of whalebone or wood, and then a woman had to step into it before she wore her dress.

The corset became quite popular that it became the instrument that defined a woman’s shape for several centuries after. When you look at it, it was incredible how women had to put up with such contraption so that they could remain in shape.

In the 19th century, the gridle finally outshone the corset. This was an undergarment in which the weaving and busk went all the way to the front from the back. As a result, the woman’s torso formed an S shape which was basically the ultimate sensuality for the woman’s form.

It was in the 18th century when the corset was finally divided into two curves that resemble the modern bra. However, when you look at it practically, it’s really the corset in which the top was supported by straps while the bottom part still concealed the waist like a corset.

Bras Known to Make a Splash Today

It wasn’t until 1907 when the advent of bra (as it’s known presently) was finally seen. With Vogue magazine referring to it as the “brassiere”, the Oxford Dictionary added the word in 1911.

With time, the bra has evolved in different ways. We have different cups, bandeau tops, torpedo or bullet shape, leopard prints as well as laces, push up bras, sports or jog bras, and more. All these appeared in quick succession, one after the other.

There is barely any write-up on women undergarments that doesn’t mention Victoria’s Secret.

The first VS store was opened in Palo Alto in California. According to the legend, Ray Raymond, the founder of Victoria’s Secret, together with his wife, came up with the idea of opening up lingerie-only store for women since it was uncomfortable for them to shop for their undergarments in public in department stores.

At the time, this was a novel idea and what followed after that as it’s said is history!

What to Wear Instead of a Bra

Now that you’re aware of the history of bra and its evolution, let’s discuss how you can unhook it as well as some of the best alternatives of the garment that you can go for.

Here are some of the clothing you can wear instead of a bra.

1. Modern Corsets

Since we’ve been going through the history and evolution of women’s undergarments, let’s wade back to the 16th century. Don’t give up on us yet, we were just pulling your leg!

Everything about the corset isn’t a joke. The modern-day corset is a comfortable laced up version which will make you feel elegant while it clinches up the waist. This gives you a push up action that is desired by most women.

If you’re longing for something that will make you look sexy for a special person, then modern-day corset is the perfect go-to thing.

Breast Lift Tapes

Lift tapes are a great alternative to bras. The bra accessories are used to lift up the breasts using an adhesive tape. In turn, this offers enough support without having to experience the contraption that comes with wearing a bra.

Lift tapes come in handy when you would like to go braless and not draw attention. The tapes support the breasts so that they don’t sag. However, lift tapes might not be great for women with a heavy chest.

Bikini Tops as Bras

If you can’t use breast lift tapes because you have heavy breasts, there are other options you can consider. If you’re bold and comfortable enough to walk around in your bathing suit instead of the traditional bra, go for it!

Tube Bras and Bandeaus

Bandeaus are made from different materials, including cotton, lace, etc. The undergarments also come in a variety of colors that would look perfect underneath a translucent top.

The major downside of a bandeau is that it easily shifts since there is nothing holding it in place. Thus, you should avoid wearing it when you have a lot of activities to do.

Bandeau and tube tops are also not recommended for women with sensitive ribs. If you have sensitive ribs, you want something with a wider band.

Chest Wrapping

Chest wrapping originates from Japanese culture where it was done using a certain type of special cloth (which is really long) known as the “sarashi”. The cloth is still available today and is practically 10 to 15 feet long and a foot wide. The main idea behind the sarashi is to wrap it several times around the chest in layers, just like a mummy.

However, if the wrap is too tight, you might have some trouble breathing.

Chest wrapping only works for women who are going for a flat chested look or those who are active but can’t wear a sports bra.

Sports Bra

This is not only one of the most comfortable and obvious alternatives to the normal bra, it is a blessing as well! Sports bras are not only comfortable, but are also available in a variety of colors and material such as cotton, spandex, etc.

If you’re an active member of the gym, these types of bras can also be comfortable tops. However, similar to the traditional bras, it’s vital that you find that sports bra that fits perfectly.

Camisoles

The other great and comfortable alternative to the traditional bra are camisoles. There are camisoles with built-in bras available in the market. However, if you would like to stay away from such, you can go for a tight camisole which will prevent sagging and at the same time provide adequate support. Camisoles made from nylon and spandex material are the perfect option for this purpose.

However, camisoles l might not be the ideal choice for going out with during a hot summer day because they add an extra layer underneath what you’re wearing.

Shapewear

If you’re looking for a brilliant alternative to the traditional bra, then shapewear is perfect. As the name suggests, the undergarment provides your body with great shape, especially for someone who is having trouble trying to shed off some extra pounds! Wearing shapewear will make you feel good and comfortable.

There are various versions of shapewear made from different types of materials.. The level of compression will be achieved depending on how dense the material is.

Depending on what you find comfortable, you can go for shapewear that offers light to moderate control or even high control. When shopping for shapewear, go for what your body needs.

There are numerous sewing patterns for bras and YouTube videos that you can watch to learn how to make your own bra. If none of the above options suit you, and all you’d like is freedom from contraption, just set the girls free! Don’t be ashamed of the natural look!

Don’t let the societal norms dictate what to wear to care for your sisters. Choose to go without a bra from time to time. One thing most women can attest to is that there is no greater feeling than oing braless!

A good sports bra can help support your chest and make you more comfortable while you work out, but it’s important that you choose the right fit and style for your needs. Look for an encapsulation sports bra, which has separate cups to prevent your breasts from moving around too much when you exercise. If you have an A or B cup or you’re only doing low-impact exercise, you can also use a compression sports bra, which doesn’t have separate cups. Get it in the same size as your regular bras and make sure the cups hold your whole breasts to avoid any discomfort. Your sports bra should also have adjustable clasps or straps so you can make it fit right. When you try on your sports bra, pull on the straps and band around your chest to make sure it’s tight. You don’t want more than an inch of movement, since this won’t support your chest properly. For more tips from our Personal Trainer co-author, including how often to replace your sports bra, read on!
