If you’re new to the website, and are ready to stop lurking and start contributing to the dialogue (or even spark some) here’s how to comment and post on Reddit, for both its desktop and mobile platforms.

How to post on Reddit using a computer
1. Open your web browser of choice on your Mac or PC and go to the Reddit website.
2. If you haven’t already, sign in to your Reddit account. You’ll be directed back to the homepage.
3. Find the community, i.e. «subreddit,» you want to post in. You can navigate there by entering the «reddit.com/r/subredditname» URL, or by searching for the subreddit using the search box at the top.
4. Click «Create Post,» near the top of the subreddit’s header.
5. Choose a title and compose your post. Click «Post» to submit.
How to post on Reddit using a mobile device
1. Open or download the Reddit app on your Android or iPhone.
2. Open the app, and sign in with your Reddit account credentials by tapping the profile icon in the top-left corner.
3. Navigate to the subreddit where you’d like to post. If you’re subscribed to the subreddit, tap the icon at the bottom of circles and squares. Otherwise, search for the subreddit in the top search bar.
4. To create a post, tap the pencil icon in the bottom-center.
5. Tap the icon of the type of content you want to include.
6. Create a title for your post, and write or attach your multimedia content.
7. Finalize by tapping «Post» in the top-right corner.

Reddit has always been ugly. At first glance, the site looks like an unmanageable cesspool of links, threads, and images. That’s because that’s exactly what it is. It may not be user-friendly, but it’s certainly user-driven and one of the best places on the internet to find niche content, viral conversations, tight-knit communities, and even deep web tidbits. Luckily, learning how to post on Reddit is easier than it seems.
How to post on Reddit
Whereas Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and virtually every other major site has become more user-friendly to fit with the times, Reddit in 2018 looks much like the Reddit of 2005: a violent maelstrom of internet junk that will convince you that the world is ending.
You type in Reddit.com on any given day and could be greeted by a picture of a cross-eyed mongoose or someone’s passive aggressive note to their roommate.
You scroll down and there’s a thread on SpaceX conspiracy theories followed by a link to a Trevor Noah bit with Jack Black playing a Sax-a-Boom. Scroll down more, and there’s a link to that scary U.N. climate change report that made you reconsider having children followed by a Spongebob Squarepants meme on the rising costs of college tuition and a trending recipe for chocolate chip cookies with avocado.

Create a post on Reddit
First off, get the easy part out of the way and create an account on Reddit. You’ll only need an e-mail address to sign up, and you can find the account sign-up at the drop-down in the top-right corner.
After you’re signed in, click on the blue “Create Post” button on the top-right of the Reddit homepage. You’ll then see a page that looks like this:
You’ll have to select which community, or subreddit to which you’d like to post your submission. Give some thought to which subreddit would make the most appropriate home for your content.
Before you post, it’s best to familiarize yourself with Reddit by subscribing to a few subreddits and noting the type of posts that get upvoted the most. Upvotes are the “likes” of the Reddit universe. If another Reddit user appreciates your post, they’ll usually give it an upvote. Upvotes push posts up to the front of the subreddit where even more Redditors can see it.
How to post pictures on Reddit
You may not always be authorized to post an image or video to a particular subreddit. Individual subreddits can have their own guidelines for what kind of content to post. You’ll see these rules automatically pop up when you select a subreddit on the “Create Post” function. Some subreddits are pretty nitpicky about what kind of content they will accept, so be sure to review their guidelines to avoid wasting your time.
Don’t follow the rules, and you can wind up banned.
For most subreddits, you’ll have the option of creating a post, adding an image or video, or submitting a link.
Update 10:45am CT, Dec. 17: Reddit does allow you to embed images/videos within posts.

How to post a link on Reddit
If you’re submitting a link to a news article, be aware that certain subreddits like r/politics won’t allow you to submit articles that are older than one month. Certain subreddits like r/pics forbid screenshots or images that include personal information, such as names or social media details.
There are also tags for NSFW content, original content (i.e. if you’re submitting a photo or something you created yourself), and spoilers (crucial if you’re discussing books or movies).
When everything is filled out, click “Submit”, and your post will be published.

How to keep readers engaged with your post
If a reply to a post receives a ton of upvotes, it’s obvious it resonated with users in some way. Be sure to respond a nd then post again—the best redditors use the site non-stop.

How To Post On Reddit
We’ve all heard of it, but how many people actually know how to use it?
Reddit can be intimidating for someone who hasn’t yet got to grips with how it works. It looks a little strange, the interface is both simple and confusing at the same time, and there is SO much stuff on there.
But for those of you looking to share ideas, seek advice, or connect with a large community, Reddit really is the best online forum.
If you’ve never been in Reddit but have heard all the hype, let me explain:
Reddit is a vast online community that covers everything you’ve ever thought of and quite a few things you haven’t. The reddit.com website is a platform for the things its users (‘redditors’) write and share online.
Subreddits are like categories. There are subreddits for everything.
Seriously. If you want to find out about a conspiracy theory, there’s a subreddit for that.
Like cat pictures? There’s a subreddit for that.
Want to discuss subreddits? There’s a subreddit for that too.
Skincare, fencing, pens, shopping hacks, celebrities, if you can name it, there’s a subreddit on it. There’s even trending and newsworthy subreddits so you can see the most popular things on the internet.
Within a subreddit, all the content links to that particular topic. Content can be anything. Sometimes it’s a question asked by one user and answered by others.
It can also be links, comments, business proposals, ideas, theories, tips, thoughts, random writings, images… you get the idea.
Posting on Reddit is easy once you know how
First things first, you’ll need to create an account. On the homepage, you should see a “sign up” button in the top right corner. If you already have an account, the “log in” button is in the same place.
Once you’re on your homepage, you can start adding to the Reddit community.
Creating your first Reddit post
There are two ways to create a post. If you want to start a new subreddit of your own, or aren’t sure what subreddit to post to yet, you can click the “create post” button in the top left corner.
It’s on the taskbar at the top of the page and looks like a pencil drawing a line.
This will take you to a new page where you can get creative and add text, links, images, polls, and whatever else you like. You can also add NSFW (Not Safe For Work) and spoiler tags if applicable.
The top of the Reddit panel has four tabs; Post, Images & Videos, Link, and Poll. Each tab allows you to add a different element.
For posting pictures to Reddit, you can either drag and drop the image from another window on your desktop or select images from your computer to upload them. If you want, you can add multiple images and videos.
Posting to a subreddit
You have to post to a subreddit; you can’t just leave your post floating around without an anchor to a category.
I recommend following the subreddit you want to post to first. This way, when you’ve written your post, you can add it directly.
Alternatively, you can head to the search bar and find the subreddit you’d like to add to.
Once you’re on the feed, there is a “create post” bar at the top right of the page. This will allow you to add to this subreddit – but be careful, if you post in the wrong subreddit, you’ll receive bad karma!
How does karma work on Reddit?
Yes, Reddit has Karma. And voting.
Once you’ve added a post, other users can vote it up or down. Initially, voting was used to determine if a post was relevant. So, if you posted something about skincare on a gaming subreddit, you’d receive loads of downvotes, and your post would be removed.
Now, voting is used like likes on Facebook.
If someone agrees, they vote you up. If they disagree, they vote you down.
This means that even if you post on the right subreddit, you could receive lots of downvotes if Redditors (other Reddit users) don’t agree with you.
Your posts score is simply the number of upvotes, minus the number of downvotes. The higher the score, the more people will see the post.
People can also vote on your comments. If you comment on someone else’s post, users will vote on that too.
If you get lots of upvotes on your posts and comments, your Reddit profile will receive lots of good Karma. You can find your karma points on your profile.
Now, karma doesn’t really do anything, but it’s good to have.
Having a good karma score on your page tells other users that you post really great stuff, and you’re a good addition to the site. Think of it as like respect or street cred.
Reddiquette and how to get good karma
Now you know how to post on Reddit, and the consequences of voting, you need to know how to get upvoted and receive lots of good karma.
There are certain unspoken rules of how to behave, what to say, and what to post, or not post, on Reddit.
This is affectionately termed «Reddiquette».
There are lots of ways to receive good karma. Posting interesting, unique content and adding insightful comments on other people’s posts is a great way to get good karma.
However, there are some things you definitely shouldn’t do if you want to avoid downvotes and bad karma. If you ask people for upvotes, you’ll almost certainly get downvotes.
The voting system is supposed to be a natural reflection of users’ preferences, trying to scam the system will get you kicked out. Additionally, if you are only posting on Reddit about you, your business, and how awesome you are, people will get fed up with your bragging and vote you down.
And of course, spamming.
If you spam the same content across multiple subreddits to get attention, you’ll get kicked out. Reddit has been known to ban users for this, so be careful.
Basically, if you plan to use Reddit in a friendly way, you’ll be fine, and the good karma will come flooding in.
Subreddit rules
Some subreddits have rules. These are specific conditions related to that subreddit but be aware that similar subreddits might have different rules.
For example, a subreddit about American Presidents might say that you can’t post about any presidents before Abraham Lincoln.
A different subreddit about Presidents of the USA might allow you to post about any president. It’s worth checking these as ignoring them will get you downvoted immediately.
How to post on Reddit mobile app
Like all good social media platforms, Reddit also has its own app so you can Reddit from anywhere.
Head to your app store and search for «Reddit». Once you’re in the app, tap the profile button in the top corner to sign in.
From there, you can either search for a subreddit or go to one you have already subscribed to.
Posting from the app is very similar to posting for a computer. Tap the pencil icon (orange icon in the middle of the screen) to add a post. You can add all sorts of images and links on the app as well.
Once you’re done, click post in the top corner, and that’s it.
So, now you know how to post to Reddit, you can go out and get started.
Reddit is a really great online community and can be super helpful if used properly. Many people are intimidated by the sheer amount of information on the site and never learn how to use it.

Half a billion people look at Reddit every day—voting, commenting, and occasionally even clicking a link.
If you’d like to post something on the site you’ll first need a Reddit account; sign up here if you don’t already have one. You can start posting right away, but there are a few things you should learn first. Let’s go over them, then show you how to actually post things.
Things You Need to Know Before You Post on Reddit
Reddit isn’t like other social networks, where your posts are seen by your specific friends or followers. Instead, things are posted to specific communities, called subreddits. Members of those communities vote on whether or not the post is worthwhile, and the number of votes determines whether users subscribed to that subreddit see posts or not.
This can be confusing for new users, which is why it’s important to read up on the proper etiquette before posting. It basically boils down to learning what kind of posts people like in a given community but there’s a bit more to it than that. I recommend spending some time browsing posts on a particular community before posting there. Reading Reddit’s outline of Reddiquette, along with the rules outlined by any particular subreddit, is also a good idea.
Take this seriously. Bad behavior, particularly spam, is really looked down upon by Reddit users, and there’s a good chance someone will point it out.
How to Post on Reddit
Ready to start posting? Head to the specific subreddit you’d like to post to, then click the Create Post button.
From here you can post three kinds of things: a Text post, an Image or video, or a Link.
Text posts require a Title, and should probably also include some Text. This is a great way to start a conversation.
The text editor has a toolbar for formatting, but markdown is also an option. Check out our guide to markdown if you don’t know how to use that.
Media posts require a title and a video or photo, which you can upload from your computer.
Make sure to mark anything that’s not safe to work with the NSFW tag.
Finally, there are link posts, which require a title and a link.
When you’re done click the Post button. Your post is now on Reddit!
How many people will see your post? It depends whether members of the subreddit like it or not! Good luck.

How to Post on Reddit – Beginner’s Guide (with Pictures)
In this beginner’s guide on how to post on Reddit, we’ll look into 4 simple steps of making a successful submission along with a few extra tips for marketers.
Step 1: Create an account
Before posting on Reddit you need to have an account. Creating one is easy and it takes less than a minute, also no email confirmation is required. Click on the “create an account” link at the upper right corner.
This will open the account creation popup
Fill up the standard registration form and click Create an account.
Step 2: Choose a Sub-Reddit
Think about the topic of your submission and choose the sub-reddit you’d like to post to. You can find a list of sub-reddits ordered by popularity here. The ideal place for you would be a sub-reddit where your target audience, prospects and customers reside. If you are selling fitness supplements, an obvious choice would be the /r/Fitness sub-reddit.

2.2 Tips for Choosing the Right Sub-Reddit
Note that size not always matters – what you need is quality traffic and not just a bunch of passbyers who’ll never go back to your site and will just damper other visitor’s page opening speed. For example, a link from/r/Pics will result in a huge spike in visitors and 0 (zero) leads generated. This is probably not what you want unless you are Coca Cola.
Another problem with the bigger sub-reddis is that there’s a lot of competition there. All the big B2C brands target them, so if you’re a small player you’ll have to put much more effort to stand out in the crowd.
The last thing to check are the actual rules for the specific sub-reddit. Most of the sub-reddits don’t allow direct links to commercial websites, so you have to be very subtle here. Better give them a brief look or you risk your link being blocked.
Step 2: Fill the submission form
Once you’ve chosen a sub-reddit, click the Submit a Link button on the right side of the sub-reddit itself. This will open the post submission form:
Note the warning at the top. Since this is the science subreddit, your hobby blog post will be deleted unless already reviewed by other proven scientists. Every sub-reddit have such specifics so as stated above you’ll have to be careful with that.
So you input a title and a valid URL for your content and fill the Are you Human box.
Step 3: Submit your Post and Observe
Just click the Submit button and wait a minute until your submission gets live. Once there, you’ll see an influx of traffic to your site and hopefully some comments on your submission. Make sure you answer them all to engage with people. This will make your viewers more active and at the same time increase your submission’s rank inside Reddit’s algorithm (which is the thing that decides if your link stays on top or disappears into oblivion).
Step 4: Analyze and Repeat
4.1 Cross-Posting your submission (i.e. “X-POST from /r/marketing”)
When you do that, a common courtesy is to include “(x-post from /r/#subreddit#)” in the title, replacing #subreddit# with the original sub-reddit you’ve posted it to. This is known as cross-posting on Reddit and shows people that you are aware a post has already been posted somewhere else but you still think it might provide value (therefore lowering the chances of getting shadow-banned for spamming).
