Just buy it from Willy. You’ll see that the fiberglass rod has a slot for bait, and the iridium rod has a slot for bait and for tackle.

Attaching anything to the fiberglass rod din’t work for me either. Iridium rod worked fine though.

Fiberglass can take bait and only bait, as far as I can tell.

Iridium rod can take bait as well as a «tackle» (lure) item, like the barbed hooks, «trap bob», spinners, etc.

I’ll throw out some random instinctive guesses that might cause it to magically work, based on previous experience with weird interface bugs in games/software, lol:

You don’t happen to be trying to apply the bait in the shop interface or a container interface, do you? If you are, try doing it just from your regular inventory view and see if that works.

If the rod is not on the top row of your inventory (the active/hotbar portion), try placing it there first? Try making its hotkey active, or inactive.

Try putting the rod in a container, leave the interface, and take it back out.

Try restarting the game after you save next too.

Stardew Valley is a PC farm simulation game that’s very similar to Harvest Moon. And just like the HM games, there’s a lot to do in Stardew that doesn’t involve farming. Let’s look at what bait is, how to use it, and which pieces of bait are the best for which scenarios.

What is Bait and How Do You Use It?

Bait is an item that helps you catch fish in Stardew Valley. It can be attached to a Fiberglass Rod, an Iridium Rod, or inserted into a Crab Pot. Attaching bait to any fishing rod will apply effects that can better help the player catch fish. And, it’s simple to use!

To attach the bait to your rod, go to the inventory menu. Left-click on the bait in to pick it up (if you get too many pieces of bait, you can right-click to put some of the bait back into your inventory). Next, you need to right-click on the rod. The bait will disappear from your view but don’t worry, it’s still connected to the rod.

If you’re playing Stardew Valley on console, here are the controller commands for choosing and using bait for fishing:

Leave the inventory menu and begin fishing. You can only use one bait per casting. Once you’ve used up all of the selected bait, you’ll get a pop-up message from the game. Or, if you finish fishing without depleting your bait, you’ll be able to use it next time.

If you want to separate your rod and bait, just click on the inventory menu again and right-click the rod (or press X on the controller). Then you’re finished.

Using bait and tackle can be a bit confusing for players new to Stardew Valley’s fishing system. Here’s a quick summary of how it’s done, and what they do for you when fishing. If you need help with how to fish, click here.

First know that the Bamboo fishing pole has no slots available for bait nor tackle. The better rods have these features. The ability to use bait comes with Level 2 Fishing, as it will make Will sell the Fiberglass fishing pole at his shop by the beach for 1,800G (you should receive a letter indicating he has it available). You can also buy bait cheap there, though level 2 fishing teaches you to craft your own.

How to Use Fishing Bait
To use bait, highlight the bait in your inventory, then pick it up as though you’re going to move it. Now go to the fishing pole and right-click. The bait will now be equipped to the pole. With an Xbox controller you select it with ‘A’ and equip it to the fishing pole with ‘X’. You can remove the bait by right-clicking or pressing ‘X’ a second time.

You can attach a whole stack of bait so you only need to do this every now and then. Having bait equipped to a fishing pole will increase the speed at which fish ‘bite’. This means less time sitting around, and more time reeling in the fish. It greatly increases your profit per day from fishing. Whether you catch the fish or not, you’ll use up one of your bait.

Tackle

How to Use Tackle
Tackle (spinners, barbed hooks, and bobbers) is equipped the same way. Pick up the tackle in your inventory, go over the fishing rod then right click or press ‘X’ on the Xbox controller to attach it to the pole.

Tackle is only available from Fishing level 6 onward and requires you to buy the Iridium Fishing Rod, which has slots for both bait and tackle. Tackle has the largest effect on your ability to catch rare fish. Unlike bait, which decreases in quantity with each use, tackle has durability. Different types of tackle do different things:

Like Stardew Valley’s regular bait item, different types of tackle can be bought from Willy’s shop as you level up. Naturally, you unlock the ability to craft the majority of these on the same level they become available in the shop, though a few are shop-exclusive. In general it seems better to buy them than to craft them, especially in the case of items like Treasure Hunter tackle unless you’re swimming in Gold bars.

How to attach bait to a Fishing Rod on PC

To attach bait to a fishing rod in Stardew Valley simply left click to pick up a stack of bait and right click on your fishing rod.

If you’d like to attach a smaller amount of bait to a fishing rod, right click until you have the desired amount selected and then right click on the fishing rod.

How to attach bait with an Xbox Controller

To attach bait in Stardew Valley for Xbox, or using an Xbox controller on PC simply press A on the bait to pick up the whole stack. You can also press X to select single pieces. Once you have the desired amount selected press X to attach them to the fishing rod.

How to attach bait with a PlayStation Controller

To attach bait using the PlayStation controller firstly press X to pick up an entire stack or bait or ‘Square’ to select singular pieces. Then, once again, with the bait selected, press ‘Square’ on the fishing rod to attach the bait.

How to attach bait with a Nintendo Switch Controller

To attach bait using a Nintendo Switch controller press A on the bait to select the entire stack, or alternatively Y to pick them up one at a time. Once the bait is selected press Y over the rod to attach the bait.

How to attach bait on iOS and Android

To attach bait on a mobile device simply click and drag the bait item or stack onto your fishing rod. Providing is can actually take the bait.

Attach Tackle on all versions

To attach Tackle, such as spinners and bobbers to your rod it is the same as bait. Simply select them the same way you would as bait on your console or device.
