Appearance
Belaf has a long, centipede-like body and a head reminiscent of a flower. He has almost no facial features except for what is at first glance two empty eye sockets, but are actually more akin to mouths. A proboscis-like tube protrudes from each hole to eat and his voice also comes from these openings. [3]
As a human, Belaf was thin and tall. He had wild silver hair and a large scar across the left side of his face. His eyes were light blue colored and he always had an intense expression on his face. [4] [5]
Personality
Belaf’s will go to any means possible to get what he wants, even if it means destroying his own body. [6] He will, however, be considerate towards others, as shown when he gave Riko the choice what to trade for getting Nanachi back. [7]
Belaf was a much warmer person when he was human. While still intense and intimidating, he was very insightful to others thoughts and feelings and helped raise Vueko’s confidence during their travels. [8] He was also just as intelligent; he served as the main translator between the Abyss’s island natives and the Ganja crew. [9]
History
Spoiler warning : The following section contains spoilers. Read with caution.
Ganja Arc
Belaf was once a human and part of the Ganja Suicide Corps who aimed to find the Golden City at the bottom of the Abyss. He served as one of Ganja’s Sages, as well as the main translator for the Abyss’s native people. After Ganja had created a Camp on the 6 th layer and started to suffer symptoms of an unknown body-hardening disease it was Belaf who discovered the source of it. [10]
He also fell ill, due to them having no alternative source of water, but was later healed by «medicine» given to him by Wazukyan. It is revealed the food Wazukyan had fed Vueko, Belaf and other Ganja members, who gotten infected by the «Pseudowater», is broth made from Irumyuui’s children and to his surprise it not only gave nourishment to the infected, but also alleviated the symptoms of their infection. [11]
Upon this reveal, Belaf was shocked that he consumed Irumyuui’s children and suffered a mental breakdown, blaming himself heavily for having willingly eaten the broth while he was under the effects of the Mockwater. [12] He is later seen being fed by Vueko due to having starved himself to the point of being unable to move and yet still pleaded for her to stop feeding him broth made from Irumyuui’s children. [13]
When Irumyuui, after her last transformation, started to consume predators of the 6 th layer Belaf, still plagued by guilt pleaded to her to consume him aswell to make up for having eaten her children. A giant hole opened up in Irumyuui, allowing Belaf to walk right inside her. As Belaf’s flesh was consumed he was simultaneously reconstructed and transformed into a Narehate. The other Ganja members, struck by the «beauty» of Belaf’s new form, concluded that they would be forgiven for eating Irumyuui’s children if they offer themselves up to her in the same way and Wazukyan proclaimed that this is the home they had been looking for. [14]
Early Life as Narehate
During one of Bondrewd’s, reportedly many, visits to the village he brought Mitty with him. Belaf was able to sense Mitty’s true immortality and decided he had to have her for his own. Bondrewd refused to sell her to Belaf no matter what was offered. [15]
So instead, Belaf sacrificed all 724 of his arms and legs, half of his body, part of his sensory organs, and «reduced and used their value» in order for Mitty to be reborn in the village. Belaf uses Mitty as his main source of food, since no matter how much he takes from her she regenerates due to being immortal. [16]
Ilblu Arc
After Nanachi hears from Majikaja, during a conversation about value, that Belaf is in possession of the supposed-to-be-dead Mitty they ask Majikaja to take them to Belaf. Upon visiting the sage’s house Nanachi is moved to tears out of happiness to be reunited with Mitty, but is shocked moments later as they watch how Belaf extends his feelers to drink from Mitty. Because Nanachi wants to save Mitty from more torment they offer themself up to Belaf in exchange for Mitty. [17]
Later on, Riko visits the sage since she has been informed to find Nanachi with him. Riko finds Nanachi and Mitty with Belaf and he tells her that the Mitty he has is a clone created from the original brought by Bondrewd to the village whom he wanted to use as a nutrition source. Because he couldn’t afford to buy Mitty directly from him, he sacrificed half of his body to have the village replicate her. He also tells her about how Nanachi offered themself up to him and that he is willing to sell her back to Riko in exchange for something of similar value. [18]
He suggests to her to trade both her eyes, both her legs or her complete digestive system to him. Before Riko can make a deal with him Majikaja closes up her mouth, tells her not to be hasty and Riko gives up for the moment. [7] [19]
After Nanachi wakes up, from the trembles of the ongoing battle between Faputa and the villagers, and asks Belaf what is happening, he informs them that their dream is now not a dream anymore. [20]
Belaf informs the still confused Nanachi that he has bestowed his memories of the past to them, due to having to take his leave now. For him, his memories represent his value. So in a sense, he transfers his value to Nanachi because he likes the relationship they have with Mitty. [21]
The conversation is loudly interrupted by the roars from the ongoing battle between Faputa and the villagers. Belaf tells Nanachi Faputa has returned and will not stop her rampage until the village is completely destroyed. He also lets them know he releases them, and they may go wherever they want now. [22]
As Nanachi is about to take their leave with Mitty, Belaf points her in the direction where the barrier started to disappear. If Mitty should be brought beyond, she will cease to exist. This is because every being that was created in the village can only exist in it, and will stop existing if taken outside it. [23]
He promises if Nanachi should choose to remain, he will do anything in his power to protect Mitty and them. Nanachi is torn, due to the happiness she feels for having gotten a second chance to see Mitty, but decides their blessing wasn’t given to them by Mitty just to remain in a dream. This time, Nanachi chooses to set Mitty free with their own hands and starts making the way to the end of the barrier. Belaf as well, starts heading for the barrier. [24]
As he fades more and more, he internally monologues that, whether it be despair or joy, all things you collect add to your value. [25]
Belaf and Nanachi have arrive at the battle scene and, after a short exchange between Nanachi and Faputa, Belaf advances towards Faputa. Faputa notes that the smell of her mother is strong on Belaf and decides to kill him first. As Faputa starts tearing through Belaf, he has an inner monologue of having a gift for Faputa which he hopes for her to accept due to understanding now that when he begged Irumyuui to take everything from him she left this behind because she wanted Faputa to see it. [26]
Faputa shatters Belaf’s head apart and thus his «gift» is set onto Faputa, in a smoke-like mist, being the feelings and memories he held of Ganja’s past. Belaf thanks Faputa for being with him in his final moments and tells her she will have have to decide her own value during end of her destiny and he encourages her to move forward without fear as he wants her to enjoy her adventure. Afterwards, Belaf passes away. [27]
Abilities
High Regeneration
Belaf sacrificed most of his body in order to obtain Mitty. Most of it seems to have been healed over time. [28]
Nutrition Absorbtion
Due to his bodily changes as Narehate, Belaf is able to absorb nutrition from other living beings by inserting his proboscis-like tubes into one of their orifices. [29]

As he was consumed, his body was simultaneously reconstructed and transformed into a Narehate. [4]
Mitty
Belaf offered up most of his body in order to create a perfect copy of Mitty, which even contains her soul, in Ilblu. After doing so he mainly used her as source of food, due to her ability, but stopped doing so after Nanachi offered themself to Belaf in exchange for the copy of Mitty. [5]

Ganja Members
Wazukyan was the Leader of Ganja and took leading them seriously. When they travelled by ship, he even ate the rodents in the belly of the ship to prevent diseases from spreading. [3] After the Pseudowater had effected almost all members of Ganja and Irumyuui had started to give birth to creatures with a very short lifespan, he saw using them as only option to provide his fellow members with food and was surprised and pleased to find out that their meat not only served as nutritions but also alleviated the symptoms of their infection. [4]
Irumyuui
After Irumyuui’s transformations, he started to view her as a symbol of salvation and his ideal form of the golden city. [5]
Vueko

[6] After Wazukyan started to use Irumyuui’s children as source of food and medicine, she lamented not being able to stop him from doing so and ultimtely tried to kill herself when Irumyuui became the base for Ilblu. [7] Wazukyan saved her, but bound her in the place which used to be Irumyuui’s head thinking she would be the happiest there due to it being the closest place to Irumyuui. [8] After them reuniting, Wazukyan took her when Juroimoh began to attack, displayed being worried for her safety, and later on leaped down with her into a creak. [9]

Synopsis
Belaf, Vueko, and Wazukyan discuss on what to do since their «Pseudowater» appears to be either infected, or some unknown creature of the Abyss. They note that it should have been safe to drink since they boiled the water first, but the creatures of the Abyss seem to be resilient. Wazukyan is impressed with their ability to survive. They decide to continue using it anyway, as a stopgap from dying of thirst.
Wazukyan inquires to the Interference Units about a stone relic found by the scavenging team, which is revealed to be an Artifact called the Cradle of Desire. The Artifact is said to be able to grant the user’s deepest wish when touched, if the mind of the holder is not «messy or complex,» as it tends to be the case with mature humans. The fate of the food scavenging team was due to the state of their minds. They also mention that if Ganja wishes to use the Cradle of Desire, then a juvenile person is preferred.
After seeing that Irumyuui is still suffering from the effects of the water, Vueko requests to have Irumyuui use the Cradle of Desire to try and save herself and the others. The Interference Units say that there is a high chance that giving the Artifact to Irumyuui will grant her wish. Wazukyan gives Vueko permission to use the Artifact on Irumyuui and tells her that Belaf is now sick as well. He tells Vueko that he believes this will bring them salvation.
The day after Irumyuui was given the Artifact, she is all better and doesn’t feel any pain. But the Artifact has now fused with her body, being implanted in her chest. Irumyuui is also still disfigured from the illness caused by the water, with a demented left hand. As time progresses, Ganja puts their efforts into supporting Irumyuui and Vueko, hoping that they will become healed by Irumyuui’s wish.
However, as time goes on, more and more people die. In order to help, the Interference Units attempt to gather water from sources higher up in the Abyss. However, none of the water is drinkable, and it contaminates the drinking barrels, making them unusable.
As time passes, Irumyuui becomes more and more metamorphosed, turning into a strange hollow-like creature. She no longer eats and has no longer feels pain. It makes Vueko cry to see how Irumyuui has changed, and she hopes that she made the right decision by making Irumyuui use the egg.
One day, Irumyuui gives birth to a creature with a similar appearance to a Neritantan of a Hermit Rat. Vueko is horrified but supports Irumyuui, as she doesn’t know what else to do. The next day, the baby dies due to it not having organs for ingesting food. Vueko gives the child a funeral while wondering if this was what Irumyuui wished for: to be a mother. If that was Irumyuui’s wish, then who answered it?
Irumyuui then proceeds to give birth to more and more of these «children», which all promptly die of starvation. This causes Irumyuui a great deal of grief and Vueko tries to comfort her, as Irumyuui never gets used to the pain of loss. Eventually, Vueko finally falls ill like everyone else. She wakes up to find diarrhea in her bed. While being sick, she is unable to continue looking after Irumyuui. All she wants is water.
One day, Vueko wakes up to find Wazukyan feeding her some form of broth with a scent of fat. It’s the most delicious thing she’s ever tasted. After eating the broth, Vueko passes out.
Upon awakening, Vueko finds that she is completely healed. She finds Wazukyan and is overcome with a sense of dread over what he fed her. She panics for a moment. When she tries to question him, he interrupts her, revealing that everything is alright, and that the others have been healed as well. He says, «I told ya, didn’t I? That kid saved everyone.»

Synopsis
Ganja arrives at the 6 th layer, where they are immediately greeted by a group of Interference Units, who are human-sized, unlike Gaburoon. The Interference Units are able to understand them, but not communicate. Ganja deems the group trustworthy and follows them. Soon thereafter, an unknown creature snatches one of the Interference Units, forcing the group to retreat to safety. Having stumbled upon a herd of the unknown creatures, Ganja restrains the Interference Units, thinking that they were led into a trap.
The Interference Units apologize for endangering them using fluent human speech, to the surprise of Ganja. The Interference Units have acquired their language by observing them and predicting their language. Wazukyan decides to trust them and removes the restraints placed on them.
After finding out about the effects of attempting to ascend from the 6 th layer and being content with the fact they are not returning to the surface, Ganja decides to set up a permanent camp. Ganja requests the Interference Units to locate sources of drinkable water. However, due to the units not requiring water, they are unable to judge the safety of the water sources they provided the locations to. Ganja therefore has to inspect the places personally. Of the five proposed locations, two are swarming with dangerous beasts, one is contaminated with mining residue, one has insurmountably hot water, and only the last is deemed safe.
Belaf discovers that their guide, the child, can read unknown glyphs in the Abyss. Vueko tells Belaf that the child’s name is Irumyuui. Belaf tells Irumyuui to continue to study their language, as she will be essential to their survival in the Abyss. Irumyuui begins to study the language with Vueko and is quick to pick up the language.
Later on, Irumyuui adopts a Hermit Rat found in a hat. Belaf wants to study the way the creature lives, to see how to better survive in the Abyss.
After securing their water supply from what appears to be a fresh source, the group subsequently acclimatizes to life in the 6 th layer. Irumyuui reveals to Vueko that she was considered a cursed child in her tribe due to being barren and thus was to be a sacrifice to the Abyss, rather than a guide for Ganja. Vueko, having experienced a similar fate in the past, is also barren, and sympathizes with Irumyuui and develops a mother-like bond with her. As the two embrace, Vueko notes that she wanted to find light in the darkness, but what she found instead was Irumyuui, who is darkness. But she is a very warm darkness.
Time passes and life is good. There are good meals and laughter. Vueko even develops what appears to be a lesbian relationship with one of the other members of Ganja, Pakkoyan. Sadly, though, Irumyuui’s hermit rat gets snatched away by a predator. But life moves on and Vueko makes a necklace for Irumyuui as a comfort.
One morning, Vueko wakes up and realizes Irumyuui has diarrhea. Inspecting her feces, she notices transparent insect eggs therein. Pakkoyan then comes and urgently requests Vueko’s help. Pakkoyan takes Vueko to a tent full of sick people. Eichem, one of the members of Ganja, has toes that have melted and hardened like lead. The same disease that Irumyuui is infected with seems to have a mass spread of among Ganja, as all the infected have diarrhea. There is not enough water to treat all patients, and thus Belaf, Ajapoka and several other members embark to gather some.
Meanwhile, the food-scavenging group returns with considerable losses, counting only three members who die shortly after arrival; they transformed into tree-looking beings.
The group who departed the camp arrives at the watering hole. Belaf becomes doubtful of the water and asks Ajapoka to get a sample of rock from the lake bed. He then realizes it is not rock, but the hardened remains of a giant creature. Not knowing of any other possible source of safe water, they decide to bring water from the hole back and to warn the rest of Ganja about its true properties.
Back at camp, Wazukyan shows Vueko an egg-shaped Relic from one of the food-scavenging group member’s bags and asks her if she knows what it is. Vueko does not know its purpose, and Wazukyan contemplates whether the Interference Units would know. Vueko, remembering these events, comments that the discovery of the egg-shaped Relic was the turning point for all of these events.
